New York City Council votes to restrict credit checks in hiring

The City Council passed a bill on Thursday that will make New York the 12th jurisdiction in the country to prohibit employers from using credit checks to screen job applicants. By a 47-to-3 vote, the Council approved a ban that supporters said would significantly curtail a practice that they said disproportionately affected the ability of blacks and Hispanics to get hired.

Temporary staffing industry to grow 6 percent in US, SIA forecast says

The U.S. temporary staffing industry will grow 6% in 2015 and another 5 percent in 2016 to reach a record industry size of $121.0 billion in 2016, according to the “U.S. Staffing Industry Forecast: April 2015 Update” released by Staffing Industry Analysts. The US place and search industry will expand 9 percent in 2015 and increase 7 percent in 2016. Combining temporary staffing and place and search, the forecast calls for the total US staffing industry to grow 6 percent in 2015 and 5 percent in 2016 to reach $139.1 billion.

Sometime today (April 21) your career site, the one you worked so hard to get on Google’s first search page, may disappear down the rabbit hole, banished to page two, three, or worse. Tuesday is when Google implements a new ranking system that rewards sites that are mobile-friendly by elevating them in its search results. The flip side of that is the bad news for any website that isn’t mobile-enabled — it will fall in the rankings.

NYS economy adds 8,600 private sector jobs in March 2015 as unemployment rate drops to 5.7 percent

In March 2015, New York State’s private sector job count increased by 8,600, or 0.1 percent, to 7,753,700, reaching a new all-time high. The statewide unemployment rate in New York declined from 5.8 percent to 5.7 percent in March 2015, its lowest level since August 2008, according to preliminary figures released by the New York State Department of Labor.

How soon will you – or your temps – be replaced by robots?

A new international poll finds that 63 percent of workers don't believe their jobs will ever be replaced by automation (i.e., computers, robots), while an additional 10 percent think it will take over a decade for automation to replace them. This despite a 2013 Oxford study that argues almost half (47 percent) of today's jobs in the U.S. could be automated in the next two decades.
