New York State's economy gained 83,500 private sector jobs in 2012, the State Department of Labor has reported. This year-to-date gain of jobs was impacted by the loss of 29,100 private sector jobs in November 2012 due to the widespread impact of Hurricane Sandy on the greater New York City region. Between October and November 2012, New York State's unemployment rate fell from 8.7 percent to 8.3 percent. More

Hurricane Sandy wiped out nearly 30,000 jobs in and around New York City last month, the New York State Labor Department said on Thursday. The impact of the storm on small businesses and larger companies whose offices could not reopen for weeks afterward left New York City and the state with fewer jobs in November than in October. But the Labor Department also reported that the unemployment rates, which are calculated from a separate survey of employers, fell significantly last month. More

Albany metro adds jobs — but recovery from recession remains elusive

Employers in the core Capital Region of upstate New York notched another month of job growth in November — but the goal of recovering what was lost in the recession will definitely have to wait until 2013, at best. The state released new jobs data Thursday. The numbers show that the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metro area added 5,900 private-sector jobs from November 2011 through November 2012.
