Wage theft law targeted for repeal

Republicans in the GOP-led New York state Senate passed a bill that would nullify a portion of the Wage Theft Prevention Act and approved a budget and jobs plan that recommends repealing the law entirely. Several legislators have argued the law's requirements — in particular, that employers provide detailed wage statements to workers each year — are too onerous on businesses and stifle job growth. The Democratic-controlled State Assembly has not taken up the measures yet. More

State unemployment inches higher

The unemployment rates for January show that while nationwide rates dropped, New York saw a slight increase in joblessness, from 8.9 percent in January 2011 to 9.2 percent in January 2012. New York City and Ithaca saw the highest bumps, although Ithaca still registered the lowest unemployment rate — 6.9 percent — of any metro area in the state. More

Muccio spoke as part of a panel of staffing buyers at the Staffing Industry Analysts Executive Forum in Las Vegas. She likened a staffing buyer's predicament to that of a car buyer: After hours of negotiating, car salesmen often frustrate customers by telling them to wait while the salesman checks with his manager.
