The bridge that works
American Staffing Association
We have new hard facts that put a fresh face on a powerful truth about the staffing industry: Temporary and contract work is an effective bridge to permanent employment. Virtually all respondents to the 2014 ASA Staffing Employee Survey said that securing a permanent job was important to them, with half (49%) stating that was their primary reason for choosing temporary or contract work. Among those who cited a permanent job as their top priority, 99% achieved their objective.

With referrals down, direct sourcing and agency hires rise
Employee referrals waned again in 2013 as a source of hire, as talent acquisition leaders increasingly leaned on other recruiting methods to fill their external hires. The just released CareerXroads source of hire survey — its 13th — found the 50 participating employers, some with more than 200,000 workers, relied more heavily on direct sourcing and help from third party recruiters in 2013 than at any time in the previous decade. They also accelerated their temp conversions, which, at 4.4 percent of the full-time hires, was nearly three times the rate in 2012.

How to prevent making hiring decisions based on looks
Buffalo Business First
Your unconscious mind is a speed demon. Research shows that people often form a first impression in a tenth of a second— and then stick to it. This makes any hiring decision a treacherous tightrope act. In order to stay rational, you must give your conscious mind a chance to weigh in on the hiring decision, while preventing your quick-to-judge unconscious mind from forming a baseless opinion. Unwittingly, far too many hiring managers fall from the tightrope and base their hiring decision on style rather than substance.

New target: College recruiting
Human Resource Executive Online
You've read about (or experienced as a parent) the current job shortage for graduating seniors, and how some are taking positions formerly filled by high-school grads. But plenty of companies still want to grab them before they've taken their mortarboards off (or even before they've put them on). With all the software innovation aimed at corporate recruiting for the last 26 years, college recruiting is now definitely getting its share of attention.

Talent communities are emerging. Take advantage
Staffing Industry Analysts
In a very real sense, talent communities may very well be the next big thing, if in fact we aren’t already there. Take a look at your professional social media profile and those of your colleagues. Whom do you connect with professionally? Via sites like LinkedIn, we can easily find and connect with people who are similar to us in terms of work interest, sphere of influence, industry experience or skills. What if the next step is pods of talent that are connected at the skills level and that help one another grow? Recruiters already mine LinkedIn for potential candidates. But they don’t have to be the only ones. These online professional profiles can be created for various skills both by candidates and others.
