Co-Occurring Disorders: A conversation about Mental Health and Substance Misuse/Addiction

On Wednesday January 18, 2023 at 7:30 pm, the School Mental Health Resource and Training Center is hosting a Family and Caregiver webinar: "Co-Occurring Disorders: a conversation about Mental Health and Substance Misuse/Addiction"
Join us for this important conversation with Stephanie Marquesano, founder and president of the Harris project, a non-profit focused on the prevention and treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders, Mental health and substance use disorders often go hand in hand. Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) is the combination of one or more mental health challenges and substance misuse/addiction. The Harris Project was launched after the death of her 19-year-old-son in 2013. Stephanie will highlight potential pathways to use, explore risk and protective factors, share tips on how to engage youth in critical conversations about COD, and empower us with knowledge about when and how to ask for help.

School Counselors Eligible for NYS Master Teacher Program

The New York State Master Teacher Program is a vibrant professional network of more than 1400 outstanding public school K-12 STEM teachers throughout the state who share a passion for their own STEM learning and for collaborating with colleagues to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.
In January of 2023, Governor Hochul announced the expansion of the NYS Master Teacher Program to create a cohort of counselors and to encourage more teachers with CTE certificates related to STEM careers that are projected to be in high demand to apply.

It is important to note that the final date to submit part 1 of the application is Wednesday, February 22, 2023, 11:00pm.
The deadline to submit the complete application, parts 2-5, is Saturday, February 25, 2023, 11:00pm

National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week 2023 (#NSCW23) is Feb. 6-10, 2023, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.
The 2023 theme is School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big. Promotional Materials, Photo Challenge & Download templates and samples for press release, certificate of appreciation, proclamation and morning announcements (available in December). Also download a variety of National School Counseling Week logos; photo challenge signs; and images for Twitter, Facebook and other uses are all available HERE.

NYSIR- 2023 Scholarship Application

The Board of Trustees of the New York Schools Insurance Foundation and the Board of Governors of the New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal are pleased to announce that we are once again offering the Cristin Bambino, Paul Jensen and Joseph Goncalves scholarship awards for the coming year. These scholarships are for college bound students from NYSIR subscribing districts only. Criteria are outlined in the accompanying pages. A committee will review all applications and the scholarships will be presented at our annual meeting in May.
- The Cristin Ann Bambino scholarship will be awarded on a regional basis with one statewide award. Seven regional winners will receive a $3,000 award, one second prize winner will receive a $4,000 award and one statewide winner will receive a $5,000 award. The regional scholarships will be awarded locally and the $5,000 scholarship will be given at our annual meeting in May.
- The Paul Jensen scholarship will be awarded to two individuals on a statewide basis. The overall winner will receive a $5,000 award and the runner up will receive a $3,000 award. The $3,000 scholarship will be awarded locally and the $5,000 scholarship will be given at our annual meeting in May.
- The Joseph Goncalves Student Humanitarian scholarship will be awarded to two individuals on a statewide basis. The overall winner will receive a $5,000 award and the runner up will receive a $3,000 award. The $3,000 scholarship will be awarded locally and the $5,000 scholarship will be given at our annual meeting in May.
We ask that you share this letter and criteria with your guidance department so that counselors may let all seniors in your district know that the scholarships are available. I have also attached three scholarship application forms that should be attached to the essay when it is returned. Please feel free to make as many copies as you need for interested and eligible students.
Applications should be received on or before Friday, March 17, 2023.
