Finding the Perfect Pathway
EdTrustNY
The Education Trust-New York today launched a new online tool that allows students interested in pursuing a higher education degree or credential to learn more about their postsecondary options.
Finding the Perfect Pathway includes information about five different postsecondary pathways, and for each one offers questions to think about, resources, and guidance on next steps.
As the state aims to support two-thirds of New Yorkers in earning a higher education degree or credential by 2030, this new online tool offers a starting point for helping prospective students — both traditional and nontraditional — identify the pathway that works for them.
The tool also comes as high school students across the state identify issues pertaining to college and career readiness as top of mind entering a new school year. During a forum hosted by The Education Trust-New York this week, high school students had an opportunity to engage with college-aged peers to learn about their experiences preparing for and getting to college.
Access to financial aid, the application process, and strategies for transitioning from high school to college were among the top things students are interested in as they think about their postsecondary options.

How to spot signs of hidden distress in young students
Edutopia
Preschool classrooms tend to be organized chaos, with 15–20 young students presenting with different needs while their teachers valiantly attempt to prioritize who comes first. As a clinical social worker embedded within a preschool, I find that the decision is often made for me, with the sounds of a student in distress — yelling, crying, screaming — demanding my immediate attention and intervention.

Why aren't people going to college?
K-12 Dive
Why aren't more people enrolling in college? Why are many of those who do enroll leaving before they complete their degrees? And what can be done to get them back? Those questions grew even more pressing in the last few years as enrollment fell across the country — flying in the face of a long nationwide push to increase students' access to college.

American family policy is holding schools back
The Atlantic

Why does inclusion often neglect the needs of deaf students?
Brookings Institute
The Los Angeles United School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the country, recently passed a new policy that is a model for enhancing brain, language, and socio-emotional development of all deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children (hereafter referred to collectively as "deaf"). This policy, while not new in American education, is new for such a large public school district and an important bellwether for advancing early and consistent language acquisition for deaf children.
