Graduation Measures Review
NYS Board of Regents
In February 2019, Chancellor Betty A. Rosa (now Commissioner) committed to rethinking New York State's high school graduation requirements and in July 2019, the Board of Regents (the Board) announced that it would create a Blue Ribbon Commission (Commission) to review these requirements and reconsider what a New York State diploma should signify to ensure educational excellence and equity for every student in the state.
The Region 2 Comprehensive Center, led by WestEd, at the Board of Regents meeting on 11/14/2022 presented its report, "Graduation Requirements and Measures," to the Board of Regents, Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced. The report presents the findings of a literature review, a state and international policy scan, and a summary of stakeholder feedback. The report's findings will inform the work of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures.
NYSSCA has 2 board members serving on the Blue Ribbon Commission, President Kelly Whitney-Rivera and VP Directors, Andre Torres

What does an SAT score mean anymore?
Intelligencer
On the last Monday of March 2022, two weeks after MIT finished notifying 1,337 applicants that they had been accepted (and rejected some 32,000 others), a post appeared on the website of the university's admissions office. After two pandemic-disrupted application cycles, during which basically every college in America ditched its SAT and ACT requirements, the dean of admissions, Stu Schmill, announced that MIT would be asking for test scores again, starting with the high-school seniors applying this fall.

School cops won't prevent school shootings
The Tech Edvocate
With the number of fatal school shootings on the rise in recent years, school administrators and legislators are working hard to find answers to the problem of gun violence in schools. Arming schools with police officers is one of the more popular options. In 1975, just 1% of schools in the U.S. had police officers on campus, according to this report. Even though this percentage grew to 42% of high schools and 24% of middle schools in 2018, school shootings remain a major concern.

Myths are at the center of parent-teacher miscommunication
The Tech Edvocate
Everyone has preconceptions, whether or not they are conscious of them. It is an unavoidable truth of life that your past and experiences impact how you assess people when you see them, even if this judgment is subconscious. Everyone is affected by stereotypes and biases, even educators. According to research, preconceptions induce a breakdown in communication between parents and educators, resulting in a negative impact on children's education.
