A bus company is on the hook for a $7 million award to a girl who suffered a brain injury when she jumped from a moving vehicle in keeping with an informal last-day-of-school tradition, Ontario’s top court has ruled.
In rejecting most arguments from the bus company, the Court of Appeal found no issues with how the trial judge had instructed the jury in the case of Sarah Little, of Barrie, ON, who was 13 years old when she jumped out of the rear emergency exit in June 2011.

They rely on donations such as this and their own fundraising efforts to be able to provide this assistance and have an ambitious and admirable goal to be able to help every single student that applies for funding. OMCA is grateful for all its Members who have helped make this important contribution through their participation in the annual Silent Auction, Party With A Purpose, annual Golf Tournament raffle and/or volunteering for the development fund committee.

Jeff Yurek, Minister of Transportation was recently joined by Sam Oosterhoff, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education to announce new measures to give municipalities the tools they need to target drivers who threaten the safety of children crossing roads to their school or home.
The proposed regulations would allow for more efficient enforcement and prosecution by allowing evidence from these cameras to be used in court without the requirement of an additional witness.

Questions remain over why two school buses carrying children attending a Brossard day camp burst into flames following a car accident on a highway near St-Eustache.
According to Andre Southiere, owner of school bus company Autobus Rive-Sud, while there had been speculation the fire had been caused by a propane fuel tank, investigators believe it may have been due to an electrical problem with one of the buses’ alternators.

The federal government will split funding for bus service on rural routes abandoned by Greyhound in Northern Ontario and Western Canada but Transport Minister Marc Garneau says only British Columbia has so far taken him up on the offer.
“This is something that for over 60 years has been a provincial responsibility,” he said of Ottawa’s decision not to subsidize Greyhound or previously get involved in funding inter-city bus travel.

Ontario is proposing to eliminate an enhanced driver's licence that allows people to enter the United States at land and water border crossings without a passport.
The driver's licence option was introduced in 2009, when the U.S. required passports or other secure identification for anyone crossing into the country by land or sea, but it hasn't had the anticipated uptake.

A U.S. tour bus company and driver have been charged after the tour bus recently lost a wheel on Highway 401.
There were no injuries in the incident.
OPP say the eastbound bus lost its wheel around 8 a.m. Monday just past Highway 37 near Belleville. Debris from the incident hit a SUV travelling in the same direction, but neither vehicle went out of control.

The driver has been identified as Marcus McLean of Scarborough.
