Global News Park rangers were once again greeting visitors at some national parks across the United States and flight operations at major airports were returning to normal on Saturday, one day after a partial government shutdown came to an end.
While there were signs that some government machinery was grinding back to life after a record 35 days without funding, many federal workers and their families approached the end of the shutdown cautiously, saying they were relieved they would receive paychecks again, but would continue to restrict their spending amid fears that another shutdown could happen in weeks. CBC News Transport Minister Marc Garneau recently announced the creation of a task force to look into the possibility of outfitting school buses with seatbelts.
Garneau said that while the federal government has juridiction to force all new buses to have seatbelts, it's up to the provinces to retrofit existing buses and the decision was made to launch a task force instead of acting unilaterally. READ MORE

CTV News Travellers caught sneaking small amounts of marijuana into Canada could soon be forced to pay fines.
Although stiff criminal penalties will remain options on the books, the federal border agency is developing administrative sanctions to give it more flexibility to deal with people who arrive at the border with cannabis in the era of legal recreational use.
Since Oct. 17, adults in Canada have been allowed to possess and share up to 30 grams of cannabis, but bringing the drug into the country continues to be illegal, carrying a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.READ MORE

CBC News Crash tests that could make transit buses safer and more resilient in a collision have been stalled because Transport Canada has been unable to purchase a bus shell for testing.
After the crash involving a Via Rail train and an Ottawa city bus in 2013, the Transportation Safety Board's investigation highlighted a lack of crash standards for transit buses and recommended Transport Canada put standards in place. The bus in the 2013 crash was from the same manufacturer as the one involved in the recent crash at Westboro station. READ MORE
