Ontario is reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of municipal transit systems by launching a new pilot program to test electric battery-powered buses on Brampton and York Region streets. This investment is part of Ontario's Climate Change Action Plan and is funded by proceeds from the province's cap on pollution and carbon market.

But with the London Transit Commission (LTC) already raking in $10 million a year from the province in gas tax revenue — an amount that's expected to double to $20 million by the time the BRT system is fully built — it's possible that provincial cash, when combined with fare-box revenue from riders, could cover off the entire operating budget.

The federal public safety minister is rejecting a call from MPs to spell out explicitly in law when and how border agents can search travellers' smartphones and other electronic devices at the border.
Under current policy, Canada Border Services Agency officers cannot routinely examine devices and there must be a number of indicators a search would turn up evidence of illegal activities before they proceed.

Some time next year, TransLink is planning to roll out four new battery-powered buses that can be recharged in five minutes. Normal trolleybus lines carry a constant stream of power at a level that does not vary, according to Josipa Petrunic, executive director and CEO for the Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium, which led the development of the new buses.

Free parking at the new Line 1 extension stations will be coming to an end Monday, the TTC says.
Six new subway stops opened on the Yonge-University line on Dec. 17, with parking lots at Highway 407, Finch West and Pioneer Village stations. The transit service offered free parking "as a courtesy," they said in a news release. The intention was to get commuters used to the new options.
