Northern Ontario tourism initiatives land $3.8M in federal funding

A pair of Northern Ontario tourism organizations is receiving $3.8 million in federal funding to help boost the sector.
Of the funding, $2,162,756 will go to Indigenous Tourism Ontario (ITO) for two projects, and $1.7 million will go to Science North in Sudbury for two projects.

The Ottawa VIP Program offers tour operators $50 per room night at a qualifying hotel, when accompanied by a paid admission to an eligible attraction. There are no minimum room night requirements. Hotels and attractions must be paid by the tour operator and proof of payment is required for the funding. Travel must be completed by October 15, 2022.

Strike action threatened by 500 Toronto school bus drivers

School bus drivers that serve special needs students at Toronto schools could strike next week if negotiations stall.
Drivers at Stock Transportation voted to support strike action if the company is unable to reach a tentative agreement by 12:01 a.m. on May 6. The last scheduled day of negotiations is April 27.

As Canada heads into its peak summer holiday season, tour operators are betting the revival seen in the first week of April would gather pace. Tourism was among the worst sectors to be hit by the pandemic.

GO Transit says bus service at Toronto’s Union Station has resumed after a protest by striking workers saw some lines delayed and others rerouted to other transit hubs.
Ninety-five workers with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers went on strike a week ago and started holding daily pickets over the weekend.

Eight of Sudbury's roads make CAA's worst roads list

Eight roads in Greater Sudbury have made list of the top 20 worst roads in northern and eastern Ontario, according to preliminary information released this week by CAA.
CAA’s Worst Roads survey has wrapped up, with very few surprises, said a news release. CAA said it surpassed last year’s vote count and there are a few new roads named to the list.
