A Message from the OMCA President
OMCA
Thank you for your membership and support of OMCA. This week, I was pleased to confirm MCC/OMCA’s participation on the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s Tourism Recovery Committee. This strategic advisory committee is informed by a dedicated group of industry leaders representing all sectors of the tourism economy and chaired by TIAC’s Board Chair. Members include representatives from; destinations, attractions, festivals and events, conventions, hotels, tour operators, airports, airlines and now motor coach and group travel. Last week, Dr. Tam released a report that noted when 75% of adult Canadians have received their first vaccine, and 20% have received both shots, restrictions can be eased without the fear of overwhelming our healthcare system. While this week, the Federal government confirmed that Canada will align policy on 'vaccine passports' with international allies. While both announcements give reason for us to be cautiously optimistic, we know that many communities are still dealing with increasing case counts and limited access to vaccines. These factors do increase the uncertainty over travel resuming for the summer season. However, we can all play a part in reaching the 75% marker, so please roll up your sleeves and encourage your friends, coworkers and families to do the same. OMCA’s dedicated team continues to advocate on behalf of our members. We are here to support your businesses and to support the restart of the travel economy. Over the next few weeks, we will be releasing a few surveys to get a pulse on what is working and where we will need to focus to support our members. Please take the time to fill these surveys in, the data is vital in our advocacy efforts. For quick daily updates, please remember to connect with us on Twitter. If you are not a member and wish to learn more about the benefits of joining OMCA, please contact us. Take care and stay well.

If you’re thinking of booking that hotel stay you’ve postponed since the pandemic began, you may want to reserve a room right away.

Being Black in travel
Travel Weekly
In November, Travel Weekly published research that demonstrated a wide gap in perception between white travel professionals and Black travel professionals about how diverse and inclusive the industry is: 61% of white respondents felt it was diverse and inclusive, and an equal percentage of Black respondents felt that it was not.
To help understand the dynamics behind this perception gap, Travel Weekly asked seven members of the Northstar Travel Group Black Advisory Board to participate in a roundtable discussion that explored their experiences in the industry and share what it’s like to be a Black travel professional.

BORDER WAR: Feds, Ontario tussle over land crossing quarantine
Travel Industry Today
In an escalating tussle over whether travellers at the US-Canada land border should be required to quarantine in a hotel like international air arrivals, the federal government says provinces are welcome to impose their own measures, but Ottawa will not.
On one side of the dispute, Ontario premier Doug Ford says travellers are taking advantage of a “loophole” to fly into US border airports and crossing into Canada on foot or by car in order to avoid the three-day hotel quarantine mandated for air arrivals in this country.

Coalition of travel organizations fear U.S. falling behind in resumption of tourism
Travel Pulse
A coalition of travel stakeholders is urging the Biden Administration to speed up the process of allowing more international tourists into the U.S.
The group, which includes Airlines for America, the U.S. Travel Association and unions representing pilots and flight attendants, say the United States should have a “risk-based data-driven” plan to ensure the industry isn’t caught off guard when restrictions are lifted.
