More Canadians are expected to leave their passports at home this summer and hit the road in Canada as the weak loonie and low gas prices prompt a deeper exploration of their own country.
Canada's major tourism destinations are expecting a banner year as Canadians pursue staycations and more travellers from the U.S. and abroad visit the Great White North.

The Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) is the oldest intercity divided highway in North America and perhaps the most prominent highway development in Ontario's history.
It dates to the Great Depression, when the Ontario government financed its building to help stimulate the economy. Traffic volumes between Toronto and Hamilton had begun to overwhelm King's Highway 2 and King's Highway 5. The initial plan was to expand Highway 2 to bring some relief, but eventually a whole new highway corridor was planned.

Major public assets like airports, ports and highways would offer some the most intriguing opportunities for private investment should stakes in such assets ever go on the block, says one of the country's biggest potential investors.

Every time I hear that a life has been claimed on one of the province's highways, it is a tough day for me as Ontario's Transportation Minister, and we at the Ministry of Transportation redouble our ongoing efforts to make Ontario's roads safer.
We have invested billions to expand our highways, to repair them, to make them wider and longer, to provide for more passing lanes and to make sure that they remain amongst the safest in North America.

Ontario's climate change plan, which will provide billions of dollars in subsidies and incentives to businesses and homeowners, was greeted with cautious optimism recently by environmentalists and businesses.
The province will spend up to $8.3 billion on a range of programs to encourage people and companies to switch to more energy-efficient heating systems, buy electric or hybrid cars, convert big trucks to natural gas, add more bio-fuel to gasoline, and help the agriculture and industrial sectors adopt low-carbon technologies.

Ontario's Liberal government still insists last year's Pan Am Games came in under budget, even though the province’s Auditor-General recently released a report that concludes the event cost an extra $342 million and takes issue with $5.3 million in bonuses paid out to senior staff.
"While the Games unfolded successfully and the legacy of infrastructure remains ... [it came] at significantly higher cost to Ontario taxpayers than originally planned," Ontario Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk told reporters after releasing her audit of the $2.5 billion event.

Niagara Falls Review
Niagara Falls should consider levying a new tax on hotel rooms to fund tourism initiatives and take the burden of local ratepayers, says Mayor Jim Diodati.
"Niagara Falls, N.Y. charges a bed tax in their hotels, and that's how they fund their tourism," said Diodati. "Niagara Falls (ON) should definitely have a look at that — if it's allowed, if it's to be used to market the destination and fund Niagara Falls Tourism, which is the city's marketing agency for tourism."
