Greyhound Canada is ending its passenger bus and freight services in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and cancelling all but one route in B.C. — a U.S.-run service between Vancouver and Seattle.
The changes take effect the end of October, which will make Ontario and Quebec the only regions where the familiar running-dog logo will continue to grace Canadian highways.

Bus companies, small-town mayors, and even the provincial government are unsure of how to fill the void once Greyhound races out of Western Canada in October.
All the company’s bus and freight routes in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba — except for a Greyhound’s U.S.-run from Seattle to Vancouver — will shut down on Oct. 31, the company said. It said decreasing rural ridership, competition with subsidized intercity transit companies and regulatory constraints all contributed to its decision.

Transport Canada says they will soon require all newly built highway buses to have seatbelts.
The federal department says they will make seatbelts mandatory on medium and large highway buses starting Sept. 1, 2020.
They say seatbelts have a strong and proven record of saving lives.
The department says it first proposed the change in 2017.

On the heels of solid growth in 2017, overseas visits to Canada are projected to increase by 6.7 per cent to reach over nine million visitors this year, according to The Conference Board of Canada's latest Travel Markets Outlook reports.
"Overseas visits to Canada are expected to increase from all continents, with the highest growth coming from Mexico and China," said Greg Hermus, Associate Director for The Conference Board of Canada's Canadian Tourism Research Institute.

Officials from a Vancouver cross-cultural marketing firm said its fledgling tourism-business certification program drew higher-than-expected participation during a promotional swing through Eastern Canada in May, with hotels, restaurants, attractions and retail shops all vying to increase their attractiveness to an emerging Chinese clientele.

Montreal ranks first among the top cities in the Americas where international conferences are planned. This is according to the prestigious report issued by the Union of International Associations (UIA) for 2017. Montreal hosted 149 international conferences, finishing ahead of cities like Washington, New York, Chicago, Buenos Aires and Toronto. That's a new record, eclipsing the previous mark of 108 events set in 2005. More impressive still, Montreal hosted almost two-and-a-half times the events held by the second-place city.
