Update from the OMCA President
OMCA
With a federal election kicked off, I was pleased to see that the Liberal Party announce that should they form government they would implement a wage and rent subsidy survival program for hardest hit businesses experiencing revenue losses of 40% or more on day 1 of their campaign. The Conservative Party also announced plans to support the tourism businesses in their campaign platform, which was encouraging to see.
It is now that we need to keep the pressure on, we need our members to reach out to your ridings Federal Elections candidates today and ask them if they will support business survival. The association has prepared letter and social media templates and key messages that will help align all our messages. All political parties need to hear from their candidates that the motor coach and group tourism industry is still struggling and needs ongoing support to ensure we get to recovery. I had the privilege to join the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario tourism leader’s delegation at the Association of Municipality of Ontario’s virtual conference. We joined more than 1,500 municipal leaders, government officials and public servants and hosted 14 meetings with Ontario Ministries and government department. This was a great opportunity for the Association to connect and advocacy for provincial support. With concerns over the fourth wave gripping political leaders, we need to ensure our voices are heard. Please use our key messages and post your story on social, remember to tag your ridings candidates and our association. Collectively, we can ensure that our sector gets the support needed to survive.

CARROT OR STICK? Most Canadians unsympathetic to unvaccinated
Travel Industry Today
The first few days of Canada’s 44th general election campaign are not only highlighting the differences between party leader’s stances on mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations, but also how voters feel about the issue. The upshot? Most support some use of either carrot or stick — though more prefer the stick — to increase inoculation rates as a fourth wave of the pandemic threatens to further delay a return to some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy.

Does sponsoring Olympic athletes help small firms? It's about money and more
CBC News
Doug Ellison, who runs Ellison Travel & Tours in Ontario, is among the sponsors for gold-medal-winning decathlete Damian Warner and handles his travel arrangements.
The sponsorship made sense because of his lifelong love of sport, particularly track, said Ellison. He was a former high school physical education teacher who has coached track athletes, and served as an official at the Montreal Olympics and Commonwealth Games in Edmonton in the 1970s.

Pandemic protocols that could lead to tourism's recovery
Travel Pulse
Economic recovery and the return of travel and tourism is underway due to climbing COVID-19 vaccination levels and the gradual reduction in government quarantine and testing requirements — and the recent Traveller Sentiment and Safety survey confirms it.
Nearly three-quarters of travellers (72 per cent) have already taken their first multi-day domestic trip of the year, and 26 per cent have already taken their first international multi-day trip of the year, according to the mid-summer Global Rescue survey of the most experienced travellers in the world.

Liberals pledge to provide extra help to hardest hit sectors including tourism
Travel Week
The federal parties took the first full day of campaigning to lay planks in their plans to revive the country’s economy after months of pain from the COVID-19 pandemic, and options for covering the costs.
Unprecedented aid has flowed from federal coffers since the onset of the pandemic last year, which parliamentary budget officer Yves Giroux estimates will hit $352 billion in direct support by 2026 when all measures come to a close under existing plans.

Ontario announces mandatory vaccine plans for health, education workers; 3rd doses for some
CBC News
Employers in Ontario's public education and several key health-care settings will need to have COVID-19 vaccination policies in place for staff in the coming weeks, the province announced Tuesday.
As the provincial government navigates a fourth wave of the pandemic, it issued a news release saying the policies are required to help combat spread of the highly infectious delta variant as fall and winter approach.
