The nominations deadline for the 2016 OMCA Industry Awards has been extended to Thursday, Sept. 29. The awards will be presented at the OMCA Marketplace on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016. There are nine categories, including Driver Excellence, Supplier Member Award of Distinction, Lifetime Achievement and the Volunteer Award of Distinction.

Ontario's ombudsman is looking into whether a systemic investigation is warranted into a school bus shortage that's left thousands of Toronto students stranded without a way to get to school on time.
"Over the past few days, we have heard media reports as well as complaints from frustrated parents who waited for their children to be picked up or dropped off, only to have no bus show up," Paul Dubé said in a release.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) says it knows parents' patience is draining as a school bus driver shortage remains unresolved for a third straight week.
685 students are still affected by the shortage, TDSB spokesman Ryan Bird told CBC News. That's about about half the number of students that were affected at the beginning of the school year.

Ontario is making travel easier for families and businesses and creating jobs in eastern Ontario with a $93 million investment to improve highways, roads and bridges.
There are 23 new construction projects underway in eastern Ontario this season, creating nearly 1,000 construction jobs. This includes repaving, repairing and replacing transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges, noise walls and signs.

Ontario has opened Canada's first High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, providing some 500 permit holders with the privilege of commuting in what was previously a lane dedicated to High Occupancy Vehicle traffic. In announcing the launch — amidst criticism from the transportation advocacy group Transport Futures — the province said in a media statement that the goals of the new program were to improve traffic flow, maximize highway capacity and help manage congestion.

TTC leaders are saying they will do everything they can to avoid cutting service in order to meet 2017 budget targets, but some critics insist public transit is already suffering under the push for savings.
At a recent meeting of the agency's budget committee, TTC CEO Andy Byford outlined steps the transit commission is taking to reach the target of reducing its net operating budget by 2.6 per cent. Mayor John Tory and council set that goal for all city departments in July.
