Waiting for Ontario's first green bond: A $500 million raise for light rail transit

Within a couple of weeks, the government of Ontario is expected to bring to market its issue of first green bonds, a special type of security "where the issue proceeds are utilized to fund projects with specific environmental benefits." Ontario also nominated five eligible project types that all have environmental benefits: clean transportation; energy efficiency and conservation; clean energy and technology; forestry, agriculture and land management; and climate adaption and resilience.

Toronto's next bus route might be downtown, east-west and open to only a select few if a crowdfunding effort is successful.
Dubbed 'Line Six Transit,' the idea is to crowdfund bus lines to run along custom-built routes with the fundraisers being guaranteed seats on the bus.
VIA Rail had to pay competitors $1.7 million to transport stranded passengers last year

VIA Rail doled out nearly $2 million to its competitors last year when its trains couldn't get passengers to their destinations, the most the Crown corporation has paid for alternate transportation in the past five years.
In 2013, VIA Rail spent $1.7 million so that vehicles such as buses and taxis could transport stranded train passengers to wherever their ticket was supposed to take them.

GO closer to all-day Kitchener-Toronto rail service

The Ontario government spent just over $76 million to purchase a 53-kilometre stretch of CN Rail line as a step toward all-day GO Transit between Kitchener and Toronto.
"By purchasing the CN track on the Kitchener line, this helps us add more train trips, improve reliability and help get more people to their destination sooner," Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca said.

Canadian and U.S. security officials are considering new advanced technology features, such as fingerprinting and retina scanning, to improve the border crossing between Windsor, ON, and Detroit.
Delegates to the U.S. and Canada Border Conference in Detroit learned how security will change once the new cross-border bridge is constructed between west Windsor and Detroit, and set to open in 2020.
