On Oct. 5, the Ontario government introduced its much anticipated legislation making changes to the Travel Industry Act. The changes are part of an omnibus consumer protection bill that makes changes to a variety of pieces of consumer protection legislation. The specific changes to the Travel Industry Act include:
- Enabling the creation of new rules for representation, such as advertising by out of province travel sellers who target Ontarians, and creating new registration requirements for individual travel salespersons.
- Lessening the burden on travel businesses by creating a new class for travel sellers so that businesses would no longer need to register as both a travel agent and wholesaler.
- Improving compliance with the rules by enhancing enforcement tools, such as administrative penalties.
Should the bill pass, Ontario plans to consult with stakeholders further during the regulation development phase on specific regulation changes, including:
- Strengthening consumer protection by requiring registered travel sellers to disclose additional information to consumers so they can make informed choices and requiring continuing education for travel salespersons.
- Lessening the burden on travel businesses, the majority of whom are small businesses, by updating requirements, such as financial reporting and security deposits.
At this time there is no specific information on when these changes would take effect as it depends on the legislative and regulation making processes.

A Montreal-based research institute has found, after an intensive study, that Montreal's public transit should be completely free to users.
In a report released yesterday, Institut de recherche et d'informations socio-économiques (IRIS) said that making bus and metro rides on the STM would actually save the city money. Making public transit free in Montreal would cost about $620 million. That's far less than subsidies already given to folks driving cars, reports CTV.

Rolling with a barely audible hum beneath banyan trees, a brightly painted shuttle bus cruised through a university campus in Taiwan.
The electric vehicle crawled along at a speed of no more than six m.p.h. and only 12 passengers could fit inside. But the bus also drove itself, raising hopes in Taipei that autonomous public transportation would be up and running here within a year.
"The idea of one day being able to ride around this city in driverless vehicles is quite exciting," said Amber Chen, who was riding with her son Ruey-She, 8.

The convention centre was rebuilt and rebranded as The Shaw Centre with $40 million of the $180 million cost covered by a loan from the provincial government's Ontario Financing Authority. With events not coming as often as hoped, the centre currently doesn't have the ability to make the $4 million loan-repayment.
