Update From the OMCA President
OMCA
It was welcome news last week that the US land border will be opening to full vaccinated Canadians for non-essential travel on November 8th. This includes those of us that received mixed vaccines and AstraZeneca. In January, the US will require all essential workers or all international visitors to be vaccinated. At this time, Canada has not announced a change in border policies. OMCA, alongside of many others, are now calling on the Government to provide a date or criteria for the removal of the testing requirements, as we know this is barrier for our members and your guests. It is also hampering the return of international business.
At the time of writing, we are still expect an announcement that the Ontario government will lift capacity limits on businesses. The announcement that allowed large arenas and venues to operate at 100% full capacity has added fuel to the fire. OMCA has been actively calling on the government to lift capacity limits and allow our members to operate without limitations. I anticipate that the government will most likely announce that the reopening of Ontario will happen in stages and will most likely occur towards the end of the month. OMCA wants this to happen much earlier than that for businesses with protocols in place. We are ready now and our members have demonstrated that we can keep our guests safe.
Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland announced a further extension of the current wage subsidy, rent subsidy and lockdown support until November 20, 2021 and provided some details on two new wage and rent support programs that provide subsidies until May 2022. This is welcome news for hardest hit members and provides some assurance that subsidies will be extended beyond the current expiry dates without a gap in support. We are working hard to clarify under which program our Motor Coach members fit and are pushing hard for the Tourism and Hospitality Recovery Program but feel that both the new Tourism and Hospitality Recovery Program and the Hardest-Hit Business Recovery Program will benefit hard hit members through to the spring of 2022. I’d like to thank all members that participated in our campaigns for this support, and the recent announcement wouldn't be possible without the collective industry-wide efforts.

Small businesses warn of layoffs, closures without aid extension
BNN Bloomberg
Business groups in Canada are warning that ending federal pandemic-relief programs too soon could send shock waves through the economy. Cutting off wage and rent subsidies as planned on Saturday will force many businesses to reduce their hours, lay off staff or shut down for good, they say.
