A hodge-podge of public transportation services are already starting to fill the gap as Greyhound Canada moved steadily towards its midnight Halloween disappearance from most of Western Canada.
The venerable national motor coach operator is being replaced by a mix of provincial government-subsidized services, Indigenous-owned bus lines, locally owned startups, flexible fleets of shuttle buses and a scattering of formal and informal ride-sharing services.

Indigenous, rural and remote communities have been left particularly vulnerable by the end of Greyhound service in parts of Canada, a trio of federal ministers said Wednesday, as they offered temporary funding to help cover the costs of some bus routes.
But the Trudeau government can’t say yet how much cash it will end up providing, as it continues to negotiate with provinces and territories to help bridge service gaps in western Canada and northern Ontario.

It was a program that was phased out by the federal government more than a decade ago, but new numbers from the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) show the visitor rebate could have brought in $993 million in Gross Domestic Product to Toronto and $5.96 billion to Canada over the span of 10 years.
The visitor rebate program — introduced in the 1990s — allowed visitors to Canada get a rebate for the sales tax on items that they purchased in the country.
