An internal Transport Canada investigation into a fatal crash in 2001 concluded that coach buses without seatbelts may put passengers at "unnecessary risk" of injuries, yet the document was kept hidden for years until The Fifth Estate recently uncovered it using the Access to Information Act.
Instead, the federal regulatory department continued to insist publicly that seatbelts were not necessary in coach buses.

Michelle Straschnitzki had a moment of panic when her 16-year-old son Jett was preparing to board a team bus for a recent hockey game.
"I didn't watch him go get on the bus, but the part that choked me up was when I gave him a hug and said, 'Good luck. Have a great game.' Then I had a moment of panic," she said in a recent interview in the family's hometown of Airdrie, AB.
"My heart stopped. He was actually leaving and going on the bus."

Al Larocque says he's always been truthful when crossing the border.
But if the Fruitvale, B.C., resident is asked by U.S. border agents if he's ever smoked marijuana, he knows what he's going to do.
"I'm going to lie," he said recently.
Larocque lives just north of B.C.'s border with Washington state, a boundary he crosses several times a year to reach his winter home in Arizona.

For many, the signature silver dog of Greyhound is the symbol of bus travel.
But that iconic image might be replaced by a more colourful logo if the European bus line FlixBus gets access to Canada's intercity bus markets.
FlixBus runs lime green buses that have a pair of orange arrows emblazoned on their sides. It launched U.S. operations in California, Nevada and Arizona earlier this year, to go along with its service in 28 other countries.

The processing of commercial traffic will be a priority when the new Gordie Howe International Bridge opens in late 2024, officials with the Crown agency overseeing the major infrastructure project linking Windsor and Detroit say.
"We feel one of the most important aspects of this project is for trade and commercial uses," Tom Middlebrook, spokesman for Bridging North America, the consortium that will build and operate the bridge, told a news conference.
