OMCA
As we unwind after wrapping up another Marketplace, we turn to focus on preparing for next year's show. We're excited to make our return to Toronto for the 2017 Marketplace, which is slated to take place at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel and Conference Centre, Nov. 5-8. Registration opens in March, so see you all there! #omcatoronto
OMCA
Thanks to the generous donations from our dedicated OMCA members and delegates of this year's Marketplace, OMCA raised $21,050 for the OMCA Development Fund. Whether as a donor or bidder, your efforts continue to make it possible for OMCA to give out Industry Scholarship awards to four outstanding individuals enrolled in travel and tourism programs (winners were chosen by the OMCA Development Committee). The recipients for 2016 are as follows:
• Melanie Hampson — University of Guelph, Guelph, ON
• Luke Lefrancois — Mohawk College, Hamilton, ON
• Kimberly Natalucci – Ryerson University, Toronto, ON
• Lindsey Turrell — Genesee College, Batavia, NY
All four students attended the Ottawa Tourism-sponsored Scholarship Awards Lunch on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Marketplace. The students also had an opportunity to sit with Buyers at their booths and accompany Sellers to observe Marketplace appointments in action.

When it comes to public transit, Queen's Park is not treating northern and southern Ontario the same, Vic Fedeli says.
The province has promised millions annually for UP Express — a commuter train linking Pearson International Airport and downtown Toronto.
In the North, meanwhile, it took the Northlander off the tracks after a 110-year history of providing transportation service to northeastern Ontario and has scaled back bus service, leaving people in some communities stranded.

Toronto's train guy is branching out into buses with a Hogtown twist.
Jason Shron, a train-obsessed fanatic who reconstructed an actual Via Rail passenger coach in his basement and is owner of Rapido Trains model train company, recently bought a 1967 General Motors bus from Calgary Transit. He transformed the green Cowtown bus into the original maroon and yellow TTC colours from the 1960s.

Ontario continues to make progress on the expansion of Highway 7, which will improve traffic flow, create jobs and support local economic growth in the Waterloo Region.
Approximately 22,000 vehicles travel on Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph every day. New retaining walls are being installed around the Victoria St. and Highway 85 intersection in Kitchener. Necessary construction is also starting underground, ahead of the replacement of the Victoria St. bridge and the building of new ramps that will connect Highway 85 to Highway 7.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has announced that she intends to introduce legislation that, if passed, would give municipalities the power to introduce automated speed enforcement (ASE) technology in school and community safety zones. Ontario is seeking a review of the province's retail transportation fuels market, including gasoline and diesel to provide more transparency for consumers about how prices are set.
There are a number of factors that contribute to the determination of retail gas prices, including crude oil costs, taxes, the refining/wholesale margin and the retail margin. Families and businesses have requested more information about how gasoline and diesel retail prices are set. In particular, northern communities have expressed concerns over variations in prices across regions and over time.

Mayor John Tory's signature rail plan cleared a major hurdle recently, as council rejected an attempt to delay its approval and endorsed a controversial agreement with the province to advance its completion.
The terms of the agreement, which passed with the support of three quarters of council, set out cost-sharing arrangements between the city and the Ontario government for more than $11 billion worth of transit projects, including planned LRT lines and a scaled down version of the SmartTrack proposal Tory promised during the campaign.
