Conference & Marketplace a success in Toronto!

OMCA elects new Chair
OMCA
The OMCA Board elected new officers during the AGM at the OMCA Conference & Marketplace in Toronto. The Board is pleased to welcome Ghislain Leduc of Leduc Bus Lines as the new Chair for 2014. Also elected were Ray Cherrey of Pacific Western Transportation as Secretary-Treasurer, and Ray DeNure of DeNure Tours as Vice Chair. John Crowley of Coach Canada is the immediate past Chair. The Board also welcomes Marc Laplante of 417 Bus Lines to the Executive Committee.
The AGM also saw the election of Kelly Fields of A.C.T. Tours to the Tour Operator Council, and Leah Mueller of Visit Buffalo Niagara to the Supplier Council.

16th Annual Silent Auction wrap-up!

Thanks to your generous donations and enthusiasm, we were able to raise $21,740 for the OMCA Development Fund. 2013 Tuition Awards

Four students enrolled in travel and tourism programs were chosen by the Development Committee for this year's tuition awards. The recipients are as follows:

• Kelsey MacDonald - Fanshawe College, London, ON
• Hildegard van Niekerk - University of Guelph, Guelph, ON
• Michael McMaster - Mohawk College, Hamilton, ON
All four students attended the Tuesday lunch at the Conference & Marketplace for the award presentation and were given an overview of the Marketplace by members of the Development Committee. The students also had an opportunity to sit with buyers at their booths to observe Marketplace appointments in action. Thank you to all our supporters who donated and bid during the Silent Auction — your efforts make it possible for OMCA to give out tuition awards to these outstanding individuals.

But there are other uses for my golden prose, and it always surprises me that more travel professionals don't take advantage of these opportunities to get to know their current and prospective clients better.

International tourism group teams up with National Geographic

A new project with the National Geographic Society is causing some excitement among promoters of tourism in northwestern Ontario and Minnesota.
The Heart of the Continent Partnership will pay National Geographic close to $200,000 to host an interactive website featuring the region.

As a receptive operator, I have been designing custom tours for — let's just say — a number of years now, and it has occurred to me that few people comprehend just how many divergent elements go into planning such a tour. While it has been hugely satisfying in many ways, it has also presented challenges I never could have imagined. And I have learned a great deal, which perhaps you might be interested in hearing about. One of the first things I learned is that there is a huge difference between planning an itinerary for a preformed group and a tour program that you plan to offer to the general public.
