For all subscribers in the Driver’s Licence Status Check program, please have your most up-to-date driver rosters uploaded by 5:00 on Wednesday, November 20th. All licences loaded into the system will run through MTO’s database to reveal a detailed report of the operating status of each driver. Please be advised that while MTO recently announced the free service to check the status of drivers’ licenses, the result of the free check provides only a limited amount of data (just valid/not valid) on the status of the license and does not indicate changes in license class due to medical checks, downgrades, or air brake endorsements, important information for managing commercial drivers. Further, this service is limited in terms of the number of checks available at any one time. We strongly recommend all commercial operators to continue to use the DLSC service to ensure full and proper compliance in monitoring the status of the commercial licences held by their drivers. DLSC gives a full and accurate status, with the MTO service, you won’t know what you don’t know!

The 2019 Party With A Purpose (PWAP) was a resounding success! The event sold out before it even began and raised more money than any of our past PWAP events. OMCA owes a huge thank you to Casino du Lac Leamy for their outstanding support as the host of the 2019 Party With A Purpose – the staff went above and beyond to make for an incredible event. Thank you to everyone at the casino for volunteering their time and making the night a special one. And thank you to all the delegates who bought a ticket, came out to enjoy a night with their industry colleagues and support the Development Fund. It was certainly a night to remember (for those who can remember it).

Those that attended the 2019 OMCA Marketplace were privy to a display of historical artifacts from books and photographs to tire kickers and ball caps. OMCA would like to extend a warm thank you to the people that helped us put together such a wonderful collection to display: Jan Gregor, Larry Hundt, Debbie Yantzi, Terry Barnett, and Tony Al. We hope that our members enjoyed the taste of history this year as we celebrated the 90th birthday of this association – and we look forward to growing as an industry and as an association with all of you.

Road management, the climate crisis, and machine learning are three things which may not seem connected, but they do to Dr. Madeh Piryonesi, a University of Toronto civil engineer who defended his PhD this year.
This June, one of his papers, co-authored by Professor Tamer El-Diraby at U of T’s Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering, titled A Machine-Learning Solution for Quantifying the Impact of Climate Change on Roads, won the Moselhi Best Paper Award at the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering’s annual conference. Piryonesi created a model to predict how roads would deteriorate due to change in climate, and implemented it as an online tool that will be accessible to policymakers.
