OMCA
Thanks to all of our wonderful donors and to those who bid on auction items, we have raised $12,485. If you didn’t bid on any auction items this year, you have missed out on an opportunity to get great gift items, vacations and adventures for a fraction of the retail value. And of course, the more bidders participate, the more funds that are raised. The development committee and OMCA thank all who contributed and participated. We’ll see you all in Ottawa next November where we will do it all again!

A 2010 Transport Canada report that revealed that school buses "failed" safety tests and did not do enough to prevent "serious injuries" was kept hidden from the public, The Fifth Estate has learned.
The study, which showed that high-backed, padded seats on school buses did nothing to help children in side-impact and rollover crashes, was marked "Internal Research Report" and was not posted on Transport Canada's website or otherwise made available to the public until The Fifth Estate asked for it last month.

A Canadian investor travelling to Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend a prominent cannabis conference and tour a new cannabis facility has been issued a lifetime entry ban to the United States, according to an immigration lawyer he consulted.
“He was travelling straight from Vancouver to Vegas. When they found out he was going down to tour the marijuana facility and that he was an investor in marijuana, they gave him a lifetime ban,” said Len Saunders, an immigration lawyer based in the border town of Blaine, Washington, who was consulted by the individual after receiving the ban.

I spent a career as an academic physician and Fulbright scholar in the field of violence prevention, but my most important job had the title of “Mom.” Chris Joseph was a pro hockey player with several years in the NHL, but his most important job was “Dad.” Both of our kids died in tragic bus crashes, 17 years apart, several provinces apart. My son Steve might have survived if the coach bus on which he was travelling had been equipped with seat belts. Chris’s son Jaxon and many of the 15 others who perished in the Humboldt Broncos tragedy might be alive today if the seat belts on their bus had been used. If tragedy can strike our kids, it can happen to anyone’s. That is why equipping every coach and school bus with seat belts — and requiring their use — must become a nationwide priority.

School bus officials in the London area say they were surprised to learn Transport Canada had not released a study about seat belt safety on school buses until after a CBC Fifth Estate investigation unearthed a 2010 study done by the federal agency. "Like most people I hadn't heard of the 2010 study until The Fifth Estate ran the segment the other day," said Maureen Cosyn-Heath, the Chief Administrative Officer at Southwestern Ontario Transportation Services. "Speaking personally, I think it's quite surprising that the report had not come to light until the piece ran."
