A school bus strike that could have impacted about 10,000 students at 103 schools in parts of Durham Region and east-end Toronto was averted late Wednesday night.
Unifor and First Student Canada signed a tentative agreement for 260 drivers just ahead of strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. Thursday. Details will be released after a ratification vote to be held in the coming days.

Canada celebrated its 150th birthday in 2017 but it was the tourism industry that got to collect the presents.
Tourism operators from coast to coast were planning for big events and extra visitors, and in many cases the numbers have exceeded expectations even before the year draws to a close.
"Double digit increases in every part of the country," said Gary Howard of the Canadian Automobile Association. "It's not just international travellers, primarily it was a lot of Canadians who wanted to see more of their country that they hadn't seen before."

City council deferred a decision on a staff recommendation to implement a four per cent hotel tax starting April 1 until it consults with stakeholders.
While most councillors are receptive to the idea, they decided to wait on approval.
Staff will report back on the details related to the implementation and collection of the tax, subsequent to stakeholder engagement. "I think it's great, I'm looking forward to this, but before we do this, I would like to know what the response is from our tourism industry," said Coun. Joyce Morocco.
