Earlier this week the Ontario Auditor General released her annual report, part of which dealt with the shortcomings she found in the area of commercial vehicle enforcement and safety. While the focus of the report is on trucks, buses are commercial vehicles and therefore also included in the blanket criticisms.
Much of the report deals with the lack of inspections and audits being done. It is also critical of the licencing and training system, particularly the lack of mandatory training in all classes of licences and the DCP program’s inherent conflict of interest in allowing participating commercial operators to issue licences to their own drivers.

Starting Dec. 17, 2019, all motor carriers and drivers subject to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) electronic logging devices (ELD) final rule must use an ELD. This deadline also pertains to grandfathered automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs), which will no longer be allowed under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to provide records of duty status as a substitute to a required ELD. Motor carriers utilizing an AOBRD must have a fully operational ELD installed by Dec. 17, 2019.

Commercial truck drivers with a medical marijuana licence are allowed to operate their vehicles with the drug in their system in Ontario as long as they’re not legally impaired, the auditor general’s annual report says.
The United States has no such exemption, nor does Transport Canada for flight crews and controllers, nor Metrolinx for its train and bus operators, Bonnie Lysyk reports.

Ontario is making a significant economic investment in the province’s highway system by widening 18 kilometers of Highway 401 from Mississauga to Milton.
Kinga Surma, associate minister of transportation, announced last week the province will invest $640 million to widen the highway from the Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford's promise to build an Eglinton Crosstown West extension with direct access to Pearson Airport is now one step closer to coming true, thanks to a massive financial boost from the airport's owner and operator.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) announced late last week that it will be putting $40 million toward advancing "the technical work necessary to extend the Eglinton Crosstown West from Renforth to the airport," in partnership with Metrolinx.

The Ontario government is now allowing municipalities to install automated speed enforcement cameras on local roads in an effort to improve road safety.
“The province has filed enabling regulations under the Safer School Zones Act that will give municipalities the ability to adopt new and enhanced tools to promote safety in school zones and community safety zones,” Barbara Mottram, a spokesperson for Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney, told Global News in a recent statement.

Durham Region is using more than half of the $19.7 million in federal gas tax money received this year to buy electric buses.
Durham will buy eight electric buses at an estimated cost of $1.15 million each.
Four chargers are also being bought at a cost of $225,000 each.
The new buses will be on the road in 2021, and a preliminary trial will be completed in 2022.
