The past few years have been difficult ones for those in the winter tourism industry, as a lack of snow early in the winter forced many ski hills to miss the Christmas season, and lose revenue.

At least one Muskoka municipality has discarded the idea of burdening area accommodations with a new tourism tax.
Muskoka Lakes Mayor Don Furniss told township councillors at their Dec. 14 committee of the whole meeting that the province had given municipalities the option of levying a new transient accommodation tax on rooms at hotels, resorts, bed and breakfasts and more with half the revenue kept by municipalities and half transferred to regional or not-for-profit tourism organizations.

Thanks to a big rubber duck and free local attractions for Canada 150, the town of Amherstburg has seen its tourism numbers skyrocket.
Most of the visitors came from all over Canada and the United States. Officials say what's surprising is the town has seen a spike in tourists coming from various countries in Asia.
