In 45 years, Petaluma, California-based Mangon Aircraft Inc. has grown into one of the most respected airplane maintenance companies in the North Bay. Virtually overnight, though, the company is poised to go global, taking advantage of China's exploding economy and insatiable demand for skilled labor in all sectors including its nascent aviation industry. Boeing to upgrade cabin and cockpit avionics for Japan's fleet of E-767 AWACS aircraft

Airborne electronics experts at the Boeing Co. Defense, Space & Security segment in Kent, Washington, will upgrade cockpit avionics and cabin avionics on four of Japan's wide-area radar surveillance jets under terms of a $25.6 million contract. Officials of the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, are asking Boeing to upgrade four E-767 aircraft and three ground support facilities for the government of Japan as part of the Japan Airborne Warning and Control System mission control unit design and production program. SpaceShipTwo pilot reveals details of crash to NTSB
The pilot of SpaceShipTwo, which broke up above California's Mojave Desert last month, says he was unaware that his co-pilot had prematurely unlocked a crucial braking system moments before the fatal crash, federal investigators said. Pilot Peter Siebold told the National Transportation Safety Board he was thrown free of the vehicle when it broke up and that his parachute automatically deployed. More

Winchester Municipal Airport in Tennessee has taken steps recently to accommodate a non-profit organization that offers a unique learning opportunity and career options for youths from Franklin County and the surrounding area. Missionaire International, which relocated from Kentucky to the airport, specializes in teaching flight lessons and aviation mechanics. The company is headed by private pilot Jon Foote, who is an airframe and power plant mechanic with inspection authorization.More

Mooney launches diesel-powered M10 2-seater
After weeks of rumors surrounding a possible new airplane design from Mooney International, the recently resurrected legacy airplane manufacturer announced at Airshow China 2014 in Zhuhai that it is developing a line of two-seat airplanes named the M10 series. The new series will start out with the M10T and M10J models, both powered by Continental diesel engines. Both will also feature the same sleek composite fuselage design with the trademark forward canted vertical stabilizer that makes identifying Mooney airplanes easy.More

Google leases airfield for aviation research
Google subsidiary Planetary Ventures has signed a lease with NASA to rent the historic airship hangar and other buildings on Moffett Field in Mountain View, California, citing aviation research as one goal for the site. The company will pay about $1.16 billion over a 60-year lease for use of about 1,000 acres, including three hangars and two runways. More
