Detroit Public Schools fires its security force, goes with firm

The Detroit Public Schools fired all of its 226 security officers and hired a private company to provide in-school security, officials announced recently. The district will save an estimated $5.5 million through a one-year contract with Securitas Security Services, a company with more than 100,000 security officers nationwide. During the 2009-10 school year, DPS hired Securitas to supply officers to patrol four high schools. More

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., cop fired over overtime abuse allegations

A veteran cop has been fired over allegations that he repeatedly charged the city for overtime he didn't work. An internal affairs investigation concluded that Officer Rick Burn regularly showed up late, left early and charged the city for being on patrol when he was at home and on the road between off-duty details and his regular work. In a three-month period reviewed, investigators said Burn claimed almost 23 hours of overtime that he was not due. More

Polk County, Iowa, upgrades security during inmate transfers

Inmates transported between the Polk County Jail and the county courthouse in Iowa are now restrained with waist chains, handcuffs and leg restraints. In addition, inmates charged with Class A felonies such as first-degree murder, or those classified as potential escape risks, also wear rectangular-shaped locking mechanisms around the chain portion of the handcuffs.
