8 people missing in Colorado wildfire

Firefighters encountered a tangle of rattlesnakes, downed power lines and combustible propane tanks as authorities looked for eight people missing in a wildfire that has destroyed dozens of homes. Some residents have refused to leave the area and stayed behind, risking their lives to try to save their homes. Authorities are following up with family members and checking homes in the area to find the missing. More

2 Detroit high school students shot on first day of school

Detroit police shot and killed a man in connection with an investigation into a shooting at Mumford High School earlier in the day, the first day of classes for the school year. Two students were shot outside the building on the city's west side — a 14-year-old girl was grazed on the face and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the buttocks, according to Detroit Public Schools officials. Wearing neon yellow vests and packing cell phones, more than a dozen "community watchers" will line the busiest street leading to Corliss High School for a mile as a new Safe Passage program sweeps across the Chicago's public high schools. These new "eyes and ears on the street" already have made some kids feel safer at Corliss, a year-round school that launched its Safe Passage program in early August when its classes began. More

Dallas officials praise police's handling of Love Field airport chase, say restrictive policy is working

Top police brass said they stand by the department's restrictive chase policy, but will continue to review it after an August pursuit that ended dramatically beside a Love Field airport runway. "The protection of life is the Dallas Police Department's highest priority," Police Chief David Brown told the City Council's Public Safety Committee. "Our pursuit policy, driving policy and deadly force policy are consistent with our primary goal of protecting life." More
