Architects design buildings, but that's only a small part of the job, says Allan Teramura, a RAIC regional director and partner at Ottawa-based Watson MacEwen Teramura Architects. Architects also help to oversee construction, and spend a lot of time doing analysis and studies. Architects can start their day wearing a suit in a boardroom and finish it wearing a hard hat and steel-toed boots on a construction site.

RAIC weighs in on Canada Post's move to community mailboxes

Canada Post needs to deliver excellent design if it goes ahead with a controversial plan to replace door-to-door service with community mailboxes, says the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). The RAIC, who advocates for a liveable built environment, says group mailboxes will affect the urban landscape and quality of life of Canadians.

Canada brings Arctic architecture into the spotlight for Venice Biennale

From the land of snowdrifts to the city of canals — five designs that use architecture to address the realities of Inuit life in Nunavut are Canada's entry to this year's Venice Biennale, one of the world's top showcases for builder's art. "We all have the images of the Arctic that we get in National Geographic," said Lola Sheppard, a Toronto architect and a curator of the Arctic Adaptations show that is to open in Venice in June.

Frank Gehry's Australian building joins Sydney skyline
The University of Technology, Sydney's (UTS) Dr Chau Chak Wing Building will be one of the greenest education buildings in the city, and the building has reached a literal high point with the topping out of its structure. The striking project stands as a new local landmark even with its distinctive brick façade still hidden behind scaffolding.
