Two former Royal Canadian Air Force commanders are raising questions about the Liberal government's rush to buy "interim" fighter jets, saying there won't be enough pilots to fly the planes for years to come.
Retired lieutenant-generals Kenneth Pennie and Andre Deschamps say that defeats the purpose of acquiring Super Hornets as a stop-gap measure, and running a full competition now makes more sense.

The Royal Canadian Air Force has released details about the planned design for the 2017 CF-18 Demonstration Hornet.
Next year's Demonstration Hornet will be painted to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, and will honour the history of the RCAF and Canadian Armed Forces, the RCAF noted.

The recent decision by Canada to purchase 18 Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft raises questions about the future role of Washington's neighbour to the north in the Lockheed Martin F-35 program. Ottawa had originally signed up as Tier 3 partner for the F-35, with a plan to purchase 65 of the F-35A Conventional Take-Off and Landing version.
The F-35A was intended to replace Canada's fleet of CF-18C/Ds, which are the earlier-generation "Classic Hornet" models.

CH-147 D-model Chinook helicopters have become historical artifacts after the last two in Canadian inventory were delivered to two museums in Ontario.
Aircraft 147201 arrived at 8 Wing Trenton this past fall. It will be re-assembled and painted, and put on display at Trenton's National Air Force Museum of Canada.
Aircraft 147206 arrived at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa as well. It will be re-assembled, refinished and put on display as a gate guard outside 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron.

John Newell never got to fly a Spitfire in a dogfight with the Luftwaffe, but he put his life on the line nearly every day of his wartime service.
Newell, 94, was a flying instructor with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, a massive training program that turned out more than 130,000 air crew for Allied forces during the Second World War.

A favourite annual world-class aviation event is hoping to return to Nova Scotia for 2017 if they can get their funding proposals to fly.
The show depends on getting further financial commitments in order to book additional performers and finance the event, Nova Scotia International Air Show Association Executive Director Colin Stephenson told the Chronicle Herald.
He confirmed Atlantic Canada's largest operational air base 14 Wing Greenwood is available to host the 2017 Air Show Atlantic Aug. 26-27.

After 15 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces, which included tours in Bosnia, Lowther was medically released in 2005. His time with the military left him grappling with post traumatic stress disorder. He spent much of his time not doing much at all.
