There is a myth widely accepted by many in the military, by veterans and by the civilian public that the Conservatives are the party of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). This idea holds that while the Tories have traditionally supported and increased funding to the CAF, the Liberals are constantly looking for opportunities to cut costs. It's a prevalent notion, but a fallacious one nonetheless, and one that's being repeated as we look ahead to the Liberals' plans for 2017.

The initial planning conference for the 50th Maple Flag exercise was held at 4 Wing Cold Lake, AB, during the first week of December. "The stage is set for the spring 2017 exercise," said Maj Chris Horch, who commands the Air Force Tactical Training Centre at 4 Wing. "At our initial brief, we gave (the international participants) an idea of the different (flying) rules we have in Canada compared to other countries. We gave them a general overview brief of what the base offers."

The Canadian Forces has grounded its Cyclone helicopters after aerospace firm Sikorsky issued a worldwide notice for safety checks to be conducted on the aircraft's civilian variant.
The Sikorsky notice to ground all S-92 helicopters followed a recent incident on a North Sea oil platform. Operators of the aircraft are being told to carry out immediate checks on the tail rotor section of the helicopters.

Seventy-three years ago, on Jan. 2, 1944, six Canadians died when the Wellington MK-III BK-387 bomber they were flying crashed into a hillside in England's West Yorkshire county.
They were all members of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Among the dead was the pilot, Flt. Sgt. Ernest Israel Glass, 28, from Walpole, SK.
The other airmen were from Manitoba, New Brunswick and Ontario.

That coming from the Canadian Armed Forces ombudsman after a Nova Scotia veteran killed his mother, wife, and 10-year-old daughter, before killing himself.
Ombudsman Gary Walbourne is calling for adequate support before soldiers leave the military to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.

An unmanned aerial vehicle created through on-demand 3-D-printing technology has been flight tested by engineers from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory.
The demonstration flight took place at Fort Benning, GA, the Army said, and was part of the Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiments program to showcase new technology. "We've created a process for converting soldier mission needs into a 3-D printed on-demand small unmanned aircraft system, or ODSUAS, as we've been calling it," said Eric Spero, team leader and project manager.
