The Royal Canadian Air Force is planning to spend about $800 million to keep its aging CF-18 fighter jets in the air until their long-overdue replacements are built.
More than a year ago, the auditor general warned the jets were at risk of being outmatched in the air due to a lack of combat upgrades since 2008.

The new name was supposed to be selected by November at the earliest and December at the latest. But now the RCAF says it doesn't know when it will announce a name for the planes. The fiery crash of a Ukranian jetliner in Iran on Jan. 8 was the deadliest aviation disaster for Canadians in nearly 35 years, according to news reports.
Sixty-three Canadians were aboard the Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 when it went down near Tehran shortly after takeoff, among them two professors at a Canadian University traveling with their young daughters and at least four college students, according to the Globe and Mail.

"Dear friends, many of our veterans live alone in long-term care facilities. This Valentine's Day, they'd love to hear from you," a message from the Canadian Forces in the United States Twitter account said in an appeal recently.

The Royal Canadian Mint has just released a series of commemorative coins to mark the occasion.
The coins were designed by Pandora Young and feature a tribute to the three military branches of the Royal Canadian Navy, Army, and Air Force stand out in front of the outpouring of emotion of thankful civilians cheering the victorious troops.

A Second World War veteran who piloted the Lancaster bomber on multiple missions in western Europe has been awarded with France's highest military decoration.
Victoria's Edward Vaughan, 96, received the French Legion of Honour by Phillipe Sutter, France's Consul General for western Canada in a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead on Sept. 29.
