On Sept. 22, 2017, following hurricanes in the Jacksonville, FL, area, a parachute and accompanying items were retrieved from a beach near Naval Station Mayport, which is located near Jacksonville.
These items were identified as belonging to Lieutenant William Thomas Barry Troy, a pilot with the Royal Canadian Navy who lost his life on Feb. 25, 1958, when his McDonnell F2H-3 Banshee fighter jet vanished in dense fog following takeoff from Mayport. Lieutenant Troy and the pilots of three other Canadian Banshees had been participating in joint exercises with the United States Navy at Mayport and were returning to Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Bonaventure. Lieutenant Troy's remains were never found.

Canadians could be paying more than $1.5 billion extra as the operating life of the military's aging CF-18 fighter jets is extended for another 14 years.
The jets were to be taken out of service after 2025, but as Postmedia recently reported, delays in the Liberal government's plan to buy replacements means the jets will need to continue operating until 2032. While the Department of National Defence says it still has yet to figure out how much that will cost, a December 2014 report produced by DND and the Canadian Forces raised concerns about further extending the life of the CF-18s.
