Canada has been exploring the potential acquisition of new Super Hornet aircraft to supplement the current fleet until an open and transparent competition can be completed to replace Canada's legacy CF-18 fleet. Over the course of the last few months, Government of Canada officials have been meeting with United States (U.S.) government officials, and with Boeing, on a regular basis to discuss meeting this interim need.
The Government of Canada recently took another important step toward the potential acquisition of an interim fleet. In a Letter of Request submitted to the U.S. government, Canada outlined its requirements on capabilities, schedule and economic benefits for 18 Super Hornet aircraft.

If the Liberal government goes ahead with its decision to purchase Super Hornet fighter jets instead of stealthy F-35s, Canada may be giving up its sovereignty over the High Arctic as it comes to depend on U.S. jets flying from airfields in Yellowknife, Inuvik, Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit and Alaska.
That was the unanimous opinion of half a dozen retired fighter pilots I spoke with recently, pilots with decades of experience flying over the continent's northern margins and in senior positions at NORAD headquarters in Colorado: that Canada would be relegated to "second-tier status" in defending its own territory.

The F-35 isn't just better than its predecessors; it's revolutionizing the way the military thinks about fighter aircraft.
To understand just how groundbreaking the F-35 is, you need to think of the aircraft the way you do about the iPhone, Marine Corps Lt. Col. David Berke, the first operational F-35B (the Marine Corps variant) pilot, told Aviation Week's Check 6 podcast recently.

Canadians are hearing more and more about the deep gaps in care and benefits for Veterans. At the forefront of discussion is the New Veterans Charter, a set of benefits adopted in 2006 without clause-by-clause review in Parliamentary Committee and in the Senate because of a perceived view that the Pension Act did not meet the modern needs of many injured and ill Veterans. For many, the Disability Pension did not provide enough for the basic necessities, and the Pension Act did not adequately look after ill and injured Veterans and their families or facilitate their transition to civilian life.

Editor's Note: A group of retired air force commanders submitted an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Feb. 23, asking the government to reconsider its plan to purchase an interim fleet of 18 Boeing Super Hornet fighter jets for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Calling the plan "ill-advised, costly and unnecessary," the former commanders were themselves the target of a rebuttal from Boeing on Feb. 27, in which the OEM defended its product and said an interim buy is a "cost effective and smart way to ensure the RCAF can meet Canada's commitments." In the following letter received by Skies on March 6, the retired commanders reiterate their case for moving directly into an open and fair competition rather than completing a "wasteful" interim acquisition.

Boeing is firing back at a group of former Canadian air force commanders who are asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider a plan to buy Super Hornet aircraft as an interim measure for Canada's fighter jet capability gap. The former commanders recently released an open letter to Trudeau, arguing in favour of scrapping the plan to buy 18 F/A-18 Super Hornets as an interim measure while the government seeks a long-term replacement for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) fleet of CF-188 Hornets.
