Canada's top guns are in need of some top guns to fight against.
And they'll get such adversaries by the end of the year.
The Canadian government plans to award by December a contract, estimated to be worth as much as $1.5 billion, to a fleet of fighter jets to go toe-to-toe with the military's CF-18s.
A private company will be selected to act as the training partner for Canada's fighter pilots, as well as provide other aircraft to act as the enemy for the Canadian army and navy.

Canada's military is looking for a few good women.
More than a few, actually. The armed forces is embarking on an aggressive, decade-long hiring spree to boost the number of women in the ranks to finally meet its goal of having women make up 25 per cent of its personnel.
But getting there won't be easy, says the officer in charge of making it happen.
"It's great that we now have these tangible, in-year goals. They will be difficult," said Lt.-Gen. Christine Whitecross, commander of Military Personnel Command.

Cathy McNeely was a little apprehensive when her 82-year-old husband announced he wanted to celebrate the 60th anniversary of his first flight as a pilot by flying a World War II-era, open-cockpit, U.S. Air Force Stearman biplane. He wanted to experience some loops and rolls for good measure.
Allan McNeely, who served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1955 to 1964, took his first flight as a pilot-in-training in 1956.
"Let's say I wasn't overly excited, but it was something he wanted to do... I guess it was one of his dreams. He had a wonderful time," said Cathy.

While flying over an airfield in Alaska last summer, an Air Force F-16 traveling 430 miles per hour casually launched a swarm of miniature drones directly from its flare dispenser. Measuring no bigger than an iPhone 6 Plus and weighing roughly one pound, these tiny drones (referred to as Perdix) exited the host fighter jet via small canisters outfitted with parachutes. During the descent, the canisters slowly unleashed the Perdix drones they were carrying, allowing the crafts to spread their wings and begin flying — entirely on their own.
