When the First World War broke out, Canadians were eager take to the skies, flying the newest technological development in warfare — the airplane. But those who wanted to join Great Britain’s Royal Flying Corps (RFC) generally transferred from the Army after serving in the trenches of Europe or obtained a basic flying certificate from a private company in Canada and then travelled to Great Britain in hopes of being selected. There was no military aviation training available in Canada, and no Canadian Air Force.

The Canadian military is gearing up to help civilian authorities in the fight against COVID-19, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.
The Canadian military has drawn up plans to mobilize 24,000 full-time and part-time soldiers to support civilian authorities across Canada, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said.
The Canadian Army have readied up to 10 regular force units across Canada, he said.

With Canadian Forces colleges and training schools now closing the Royal Canadian Air Force is helping military personnel get back to their home bases or in the case of officer cadets their home cities and towns.
Approximately 500 military personnel from various academic and training institutions will travelling home on RCAF flights beginning this weekend, confirmed Department of National Defence spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier. “This measure will help protect the health and well-being of our members, prevent the spread of this disease, and preserve our ability to conduct mission-essential military operations,” he added.

Some Manitoba First Nations are asking for military help to prepare for the coronavirus pandemic.
Global News has confirmed a report first published by CBC News on Tuesday morning that two First Nations communities in Manitoba — the Cross Lake Band of Indians and Norway House Cree Nation — sent their requests to Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan in the form of a letter.
