The Canadian government made a last-minute, billion-dollar change to how much it was willing to spend on its new search-and-rescue aircraft fleet, but didn’t bother informing the bidders trying to win the contract to build the planes of the change in budget.
In December, the federal government announced it would spend $4.7 billion to buy a fleet of C-295 planes from Airbus, including long-term support for the planes. The losing bidder, Italian aerospace firm and Airbus rival Leonardo, had been under the impression Canada could only afford to spend $3.4 billion, so had tailored its bid to that amount.

Canada's new search and rescue aircraft could take up to two days to reach survivors of a disaster at the North Pole but the Canadian military doesn't have a problem with that, according to recently filed court documents.
A legal battle is now underway in the Federal Court in Ottawa over the Liberal government's $4.7 billion fixed-wing search-and-rescue aircraft program.

The U.S. Air Force's F-35 will make an appearance at the Paris Air Show this summer despite weeks of statements to the contrary from Defense Department officials, the service recently announced.
The decision to showcase the F-35 at the Paris Air Show appears to be a last minute one, perhaps inspired by the "A" model's first-ever training deployment to Europe this April.

Upgrades to Canada's helicopter fleets that would cost more than $2 billion have been identified as key programs for funding, according to the country's defense minister.
Harjit Sajjan said at a conference in Ottawa that if the Griffon utility helicopter fleet does not receive an upgrade, it will have to be removed from service. In addition, the Royal Canadian Air Force's Cormorant helicopters also require modernization, Sajjan told retired military personnel and defense executives at the event.

Malaysia has reportedly asked Japan for some of its retired Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion anti-submarine aircraft, as the Southeast Asian nation seeks much-needed improvement in its maritime domain awareness.
According to Japan's Nikkei Asian Review, Malaysia approached Japan for a donation of its retired P-3Cs. However, Nikkei noted that Japan's parliament will need to revise the foundational law of the Ministry of Defense that would allow equipment to be given to other nations at no cost, as currently some form of compensation is required by law for the transfer of Japanese national assets.

Vic Coroy Co-ordinator, Canadian Army Aviation Website
An Army Aviation website has been up and running now for a little over a year. The website is in the process of capturing those personalities, events and stories which contribute to the history of the little known Canadian Army flying organizations and operations. Canadian Army aviation had its start during WWII, flew in Korea and operated throughout the Cold War then disappeared during unification of the forces, about 1972.
Contributions to the website from those who served with the various Army Aviation organizations would be most welcome. We would be pleased to receive input from both air and ground crew or their families and friends. You are invited to visit the website at www.canadianarmyaviation.ca. Not all of the pilots and crewman are gone yet and through the website, hopefully, won't be forgotten.
