The last 20 minutes of LGen Alain Parent’s career in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) were spent reminiscing with Skies about 39 years of memorable accomplishments. The conversation covered many bases, from his early experiences in the Air Cadets to flying in the single-pilot CH-136 Kiowa helicopter, to what Parent called his “second career track” — a lengthy tour at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), where he filled various roles from 1997 to 2015.

This year’s Maple Flag exercise will run for only 12 days, less than half of time usually earmarked for the RCAF’s annual premier training event.
Exercise Maple Flag took place at Cold Lake from June 11 to June 22, with more than 1,500 Canadian military personnel and hundreds of military staff from
other nations, according to the RCAF. But previous Maple Flag exercises have run more than twice as long.

Faced with “more assertive Russia,” NATO defence ministers are expected to agree to new measures aimed at bolstering the alliance’s ability to respond to new threats on land, on the high seas and in the cyber space, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced.
Defence ministers from 29 NATO members, including Canada’s Harjit Sajjan, are meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels for two-day talks set to approve beefing up personnel numbers at the alliance’s two new commands: the Atlantic Command in Norfolk, Virginia, and another one in Ulm, Germany to support military mobility in Europe.
