The Department of National Defence has purchased five new unmanned aircraft designed to take off, surveil an airspace and land without needing a runway.

For overhead surveillance, fixed-wing planes can usually fly higher, farther and remain airborne longer than their helicopter cousins. Eight Canadian fighter jets have been deployed on a massive training exercise in the Pacific, despite Liberal government warnings the country does not have enough aircraft to defend North America and fulfill its obligations to NATO.
The government says the month-long exercise is critical for training Canadian fighter pilots to work alongside allies — and the planes will return to Canada immediately if they are needed.
But the Conservatives say their involvement proves Liberal claims of a fighter-jet shortage aren't true.

Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) has been criticized by those who argue we are paying too
high a price for the "made in Canada" option for replacing our Navy and Coast Guard fleets. Some even suggest we are paying five to eight times more than what foreign shipyards are charging for similar ships.
In order to more precisely establish the "made in Canada" premium, this Vimy Paper first seeks guidance
on warship costing.

July 17, 1944 in Normandy, France, was a beautiful summer day. To the west, the Allies were in a bitter struggle but continuing to push inward from the beaches and coastal towns against determined resistance from German forces.
Since January, the German defences in Normandy had been under the command of Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel, a senior officer not only idolized in Germany, but even highly respected by the Allies.

The origins of No. 1 Air Division, Royal Canadian Air Force, trace to Paris, France on Oct. 1, 1952. In April of 1953, the Air Division headquarters was relocated to Metz, France and remained there until the Air Division was disbanded in 1967. The year 2017 will mark many anniversaries, of which the 50th anniversary of the end of a very significant era in the proud history of our Royal Canadian Air Force is but one. In recognition of these milestones — 150th anniversary of Confederation — 100th Anniversary of Victory at Vimy Ridge — and our RCAF heritage in Metz, France — an enthusiastic group will journey to France in April of 2017. Would you like to join our trek down memory lane? Additional information is available at www.navereau.org/.
