Abbotsford News
"Fightertown, Canada" will come to the Fraser Valley this weekend with two options for the future of Canada's air force on display at the Abbotsford International Airport.
The Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet and the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II will be featured, both top contenders to replace the Royal Canadian Air Force's aging fighter jets.
The airshow will mark the first time the F-35 has been on display in Canada.
"We are always thrilled to connect people with airplanes, and certainly we are ecstatic to have the F-35A make its Canadian debut right here," said airshow president Jim Reith.

Canada is not required to provide a certain number of fighter jets to NATO, says a Defence Department report that's raising fresh questions about the Liberal government's rush to buy a new warplane.
The report, published in 2014 by the research arm of National Defence, says that while Canada supports NATO and contributes aircraft and other military assets when possible, "there is no hard minimum requirement for the NATO commitment."

There's a glint in the eye of Major Craig "Rocket" Baker when he talks about his F-16 fighter jet.
And he still gets chills when he thinks back to the day 10 years ago when he switched from flight simulator to cockpit, zipped up his military green jumpsuit and strode out to the tarmac to pilot the Fighting Falcon.
"Look at it," Baker says, nodding his head at one of the U.S. Air Force's two F-16 Viper demonstration team planes over his right shoulder.
"You are sitting on top of a motor producing 29,000 pounds of thrust... as soon as you start up the engines, you feel the vibrations."

Comox Valley Echo
Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon and other luminaries gathered at No. 7 Hangar at 19 Wing recently to watch command of the Air Force base change hands.
Passing off the mantle of command was Col. Tom Dunne, who now heads to Washington, D.C. as Air Attaché for the Canadian Embassy after two years based in Comox.
Taking over is Col. Michael Atkins, a 30-year air force veteran and Cormorant helicopter pilot. Like many air force members, he started his career training in Comox.
The ceremony was originally intended to take place outdoors, but morning rain forced the ceremony into the cavernous hangar instead.

Growing up, Capt. Damien Miller's father was in the Royal Canadian Air Force, so he became used to constantly moving around and calling any place he ended up with his family "home."
In 2004, Miller followed in his father's footsteps, commissioning as an officer in the RCAF himself. In 2012, he pursued a path in aeromedical evacuation after eight years as a critical care nurse.
"I attended the aeromedical evacuation course run by the Canadian Armed Forces at 8 Wing, Trenton, ON," said Miller.

When aviation was in its infancy and flying in combat was still new, four men from Carleton Place, ON, made their way to the Wright School of Aviation in Dayton, OH, for pilot training.
Their visit from the small town near Ottawa, along with that of about two dozen other Canadians, was captured under a screaming headline in an Oct. 31, 1915, edition of a local paper, the Sunday News.

Plane spotters will be happy to see some new aircraft at the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum's Air Park, but it will be next spring before visitors can get an inside tour.
Three RCAF aircraft, including a former VIP Challenger jet once based out of Ottawa to shuttle prime ministers and ministers, recently moved into to their new home near the entrance to Wing 14 Greenwood.
A Canadian Armed Forces CP-140A Arcturus, more commonly called an Aurora, a CC-130 Hercules, and a CC-144 Challenger were towed in by the 14 Wing recovery and salvage unit at the end of July.
