The federal government will soon announce a plan to bolster United Nations peace efforts in Africa, including trans-border operations, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said recently, as he wrapped up a five-country, fact-finding mission to the continent.
"I do have a number that we will be announcing shortly that we can sustain for a long duration," Sajjan said during a teleconference from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Air defence artillery scenarios are now underway in North Bay as part of North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) training.
22 Wing North Bay is working alongside more than 60 members from the South Carolina Army National Guard's 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command (263rd AAMDC) as part of the training, which runs until Aug. 22.

Although the Trudeau government has backed away from plans to buy the F-35, two of the fighter jets streaked over Canadian skies. The stealth fighters arrived as part of the annual Abbotsford Air Show in B.C.'s lower mainland. The plane has been plagued by delays and cost overruns and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said his government would look at other alternatives to replace its current CF-18 fighter jets. Trudeau said the F-35 "does not work."
But the pilots who flew the F-35 into Abbotsford are singing its praises.

In a preservation project dubbed "the Cat came back," a group of Victoria aircraft buffs are restoring a Second World War plane, a PBY Catalina.
It's a project to restore a plane that flew real patrol duties during the Second World War from the RCAF station at Pat Bay.
Back then, the plane was known as RCAF 11024, and its first home was in No. 3 Operational Training Unit RCAF Station Pat Bay. It would also serve a long and distinguished career all across Canada in military and civilian roles.

An iconic warplane will touch down at the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport for public viewings and, for those with the cash, rides in the sky. The fully restored B-17 bomber, named Sentimental Journey, will be open to the public for tours during an exhibition starting Aug. 22.
The plane is one of 10 airworthy B-17s remaining of the more than 12,000 manufactured for combat during WWII.
It is the leading exhibition "war bird" in The Flying Legends of Victory Tour, conducted by CAF Airbase Arizona, a non-profit flying museum.

Over 50 planes and hundreds of spectators were at the Westlock Municipal Airport recently, for the Westlock Flying Club's 41st annual fly-in breakfast.
Club president Robert Lawrence said that weather for the event was perfect, a considerable factor with many of the event's participation flying in from airports around the province.
"We had an excellent turnout of both drive-in and fly people, good display of vehicles and planes. It was a roaring success," Lawrence said.
Of the many planes on display, flying club member Dan Pandur displayed his 1917 SE5a biplane.

U.S. Air Force officials say they have a shortage of 700 fighter pilots, even as the U.S. battles in three air wars against the Islamic State group in Iraq, Syria and Libya.
Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James says she is looking for the authorization and funding to pay pilots a $35,000 a year retention bonus to encourage them to stay in the service.
