17 Wing Honorary Colonel Stuart Murray receives the Order of Manitoba

A lifetime dedication to public service has led to 17 Wing Winnipeg’s Honorary Colonel Stuart Murray receiving the Order of Manitoba.
“My dad always told me life is full of surprises and you never know what may come and this is certainly one of the good ones,” said Honorary Colonel Murray in a recent interview. “It’s an amazing honour and honestly it belongs to a whole lot of people who have worked beside me for many years.”

C’est le dévouement de toute une vie à la fonction publique qui a valu à Stuart Murray, colonel honoraire de la 17e Escadre Winnipeg, l’Ordre du Manitoba.
« Mon père m’a toujours dit que la vie est remplie de surprises et qu’on ne sait jamais ce qu’elle nous réserve. Eh bien, il s’agit certainement là d’une bonne surprise », a dit le colonel honoraire Murray lors d’une entrevue récente. « En fait, c’est tout un honneur et, pour être honnête, un honneur qui revient à tous les gens qui ont œuvré à mes côtés pendant de nombreuses années. »

Battle of Britain profile: Norma Zelia Watts — WAAF radio telephonist

Norma Zelia Watts (née Tilley), formerly from Coventry, England, served as a radio telephonist with the British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).
During the Battle of Britain, she was the ground contact for the aircrews that fought back the German Luftwaffe in the British skies. Later in the war, she first served with Fighter Command, and then with Bomber Command which is where she met her husband, Flight Lieutenant Jack Vincent Watts, a Royal Canadian Air Force navigator.

Norma Zelia Watts (née Tilley), originaire de Coventry, en Angleterre, a servi comme opératrice radio dans le Corps auxiliaire féminin d’aéronautique de la Grande-Bretagne (WAAF).
Pendant la bataille d’Angleterre, elle assurait la liaison terrestre avec les équipages qui combattaient la Luftwaffe, l'aviation allemande, au-dessus de la Grande-Bretagne. Plus tard au cours de la guerre, elle a servi dans le Fighter Command, puis dans le Bomber Command, où elle a fait la rencontre de son futur mari, le capitaine d’aviation Jack Vincent Watts, navigateur de l’Aviation royale canadienne.

Exercise Gander Gunner 2020

4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta, was infiltrated by 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron in July to host Gander Gunner 2020, a seven-day aerial gunnery training exercise for newly posted aircrew. Operating within the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, CH-146 Griffon helicopters configured with dual, side mounted C6 machine guns conducted aircrew qualification and currency training, to section level.

Le 408e Escadron tactique d’hélicoptères s’est rendu à la 4e Escadre Cold Lake, en Alberta, en juillet pour participer à Gander Gunner 2020, un exercice de tir aérien d’une semaine destiné au personnel navigant nouvellement affecté à l’escadron. Volant au-dessus du polygone de tir aérien de Cold Lake, des hélicoptères CH-146 Griffon équipés chacun de deux mitrailleuses C6 latérales ont permis au personnel navigant au niveau de la section d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences et de maintenir celles qu’il possède déjà.

RCAF jet was broadcasting British identifier code during flights

Since 2018 a Canadian Armed Forces passenger jet has repeatedly broadcast a transponder identification code that could mislead flight trackers into thinking it was a British aircraft.
All aircraft use transponder codes to identify them in flight, both to each other and to air traffic control. The International Civil Aviation Organization or ICAO assigns ranges of code numbers to each country.

As you are aware, the Federal and Provincial Governments have taken steps to limit the size of gatherings across Canada, in order to help combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus. While some restrictions have been lifted, the Wing Commander and the Museum Board of Directors have decided that regrettably it is necessary to cancel this year’s Ad Astra Ceremony on the 26th of September, 2020.
