After recently celebrating a number of milestones surrounding the Maritime Helicopter Project and transition to the CH-148 Cyclone, officials at 12 Wing Shearwater, Nova Scotia, invited an outside group for a progress briefing and static tour of the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF's) newest aircraft.
Personnel from the Helicopter Test and Evaluation Facility hosted members of the RCAF Association and the Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia for the briefing, which was delivered at the wing's Maritime Helicopter Training Centre by Captain Bryan Langille.

In a report that could foreshadow the Canadian government's next steps to replace its CF-188 Hornet fighter jets, a House of Commons committee has recommended the government conduct a review of all operational capability requirements for the jet and, within the next 12 months, select a replacement that is able to operate effectively in the high Arctic while making pilot safety "a key consideration," be interoperable with key allies, and "work to a high degree with Canada's existing infrastructure."

Veterans Ombudsman Guy Parent is calling for improvements to the compensation provided to Veterans and their survivors who fall under the New Veterans Charter.
He recently released a report entitled: Fair Compensation to Veterans and their Survivors for Pain and Suffering. "While no amount of money can provide full restitution, veterans who have suffered from an illness or injury due to their service need to be fairly compensated for the impact their disability has on their lives and on the lives of their families," Parent said in a statement.

Exercise Cutlass Fury 2016 continues off Canada's east coast. Eleven surface ships, three subs and approximately 25 aircraft from Canada, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States are taking part in anti-submarine warfare drills.
Canadian participants include Her Majesty's Canadian Ships Athabaskan, Fredericton, Montreal, Windsor, Goose Bay and Summerside.

Aircrews from the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada have recently participated in a virtual air combat exercise, Coalition Virtual Flag 16.
The joint, multi-national air combat training exercise was hosted by the U.S. Air Force. Participating forces were trained together in distributed, integrated live-virtual-constructive exercise.
The Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force were supported by CAE as they participated in the exercise.

Halifax Bomber tail-gunner Henry Jackson has been reunited with part of his military past.
Flying a staggering 34 successful missions with his flight crew, dubbed the "Murphy Crew," the seven airmen were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
"For a crew to get seven Distinguished Flying Crosses... I've never heard of that before," said Karl Kjarsgaard, RCAF historian and director of the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton.

There are many things that Alzheimer's disease has taken away from former Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Flyer Ted Hibberd, such as the once-familiar faces of his family and friends, and memories going back to his young adulthood. But there's one thing the 90-year-old Ottawa native has always remembered: His gold medal win at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Hibberd was recruited as one of only two players without previous military experience. Hibberd and Pete Leichnitz had been too young to enlist during the Second World War, but were selected because the Flyers needed talented amateur players.

Catchy wartime tunes and reminiscences with old friends are on the menu for the Brantford Air Force Club's 70th anniversary celebration.
Founded after the Second World War, the club is the oldest service club in Brantford aside from local legions. Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Air Force members formed it on Sept. 19, 1946.
The current building was built around 1955 and the club boasts about 150 members.

The Halifax International Security Forum announced recently that the 8th Halifax International Security Forum will take place from Nov. 18-20, 2016 in Halifax, N.S.
The annual Forum brings together democratic security leaders from more than 60 countries to address the most pressing international security challenges.
"As local communities deal with the consequences of global security threats, I am proud that Halifax provides an important venue for people with shared values to come together and build strategies for working more closely together," said Peter Van Praagh, President of the Halifax International Security Forum.
