Justin Trudeau, the new prime minister, has vowed to "reduce the procurement budget for replacing the CF-18s" — its version of Boeing's older F/A-18 Hornet — "and will instead purchase one of the many, lower-priced options that better match Canada's defence needs." America's Boeing, France's Dassault, and even Sweden's Saab have all offered cheaper alternatives to the F-35, built by prime contractor Lockheed Martin.

Justin Trudeau will pull Canada's fighter jets out of Iraq and Syria just over a year after Ottawa began the bombing campaign.
Canada's new prime minister informed President Barack Obama of his decision over the phone recently, he told a press conference in Ottawa.
While Trudeau said that the American president understood his need to follow-through on his promise to withdraw Canada's air force from the mission, the White House nevertheless indicated that it wanted Canada to continue dropping bombs.

People in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area can expect an increased military presence, more noise and more air traffic over the next couple of weeks. The North American Aerospace Defence Command issued a release stating the 5 Wing Goose Bay base will have more traffic.
Security in the base will be reinforced, and the public should also expect to see flights off the coast near Rigolet as part of training exercises.

A CF-5 freedom fighter jet monument was unveiled in front of Art Smith Aviation Academy recently.
The entire student body joined military dignitaries, 419 squadron members, and Northern Lights School Division officials for a short ceremony at the new monument.
"Sticking this airplane up here is really a symbol of the link between the base itself and the school," said Major General David Wheeler.
"I am so very proud that is has been put up and I am so very proud of the Art Smith Aviation Academy's progress throughout the last few years."

The Essex Memorial Spitfire Committee expected to gather a few hundred names of local Second World War air force veterans for a granite wall.
They've got 1,405 names. And with Remembrance Day approaching, they want to add two more granite pillars of names.
"We didn't realize the scope of how many people just air force men and women came from or came back to Windsor-Essex from World War II," committee chairwoman Suzanne Allison said recently. "To have 1,700 names is amazing."

At any given moment, more than 7,000 aircraft fly above the United States — but only one of them can be Air Force One. Now, reports Peter Baker for New York Times, the commander-in-chief's personal jet is due for a huge makeover.
Though the "Air Force One" call sign could be applied to any Air Force aircraft carrying the president, the term has traditionally been used for a specific, official fleet of planes. And what a fleet it is: The president, press corps, staff, advisors and guests enjoy 4,000 square feet of floor space on three levels, with enough food for 100 people.

It is my hope that fellow RCAF Association members in the Clearwater and Tampa, FL, areas can join us on Jan. 11th, 2016, to honour those Floridians who volunteered with the RCAF and RAF during the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Legion Post 144 plans to host the event during their meeting at the American Legion Post 7 facility in Clearwater, FL. Canadian Forces personnel from around Florida will attend. Karl Kjarsgaard, who is a Board Member of Bomber Command Museum of Canada and the Director of Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada), will be speaking and displaying Bomber Command Museum's transportable memorial. We will also have representatives or members of the Civil Air Patrol (U.S. Air Force Auxiliary) and Florida Aviation Historical Society. Hopefully, RAF, USAF and other officials will agree to attend. The building's occupancy capacity is 225 persons. The two plaques that will be dedicated can be seen here and here. Note that Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada) donated the aluminum for the RCAF crest. The metal was obtained from a downed Halifax bomber. I will update everyone again once additional details become known. Mr. Dann Oliver (RCL Post 144 & RCL Eastern Division, U.S.A.) and I are planning and coordinating.

A Reunion cruise has been set up, to reunite former serving members, civilian staff and dependents who had the great fortune to be part of #1 Air Division in Europe.
The cruise will be aboard the Holland America ship, MS Nieuw Amsterdam — a highly-rated and new ship in their fleet. We will depart from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on April 10, 2016 — sailing through the Panama Canal on her way to Vancouver, B.C. The cruise length is 20 nights. The ports of call will be:
Cartagena, Columbia
Cruising Panama Canal
Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica
Corinto, Nicaragua
Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala
Puerto Chiapas, Mexico
Huatulco, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
San Diego, California
Victoria, B.C.
Seattle, Washington
Vancouver, B.C.
As with all Panama Canal cruises — the ship will book up quickly — so the recommendation is to book soon to avoid disappointment. Already a core group are booked and ready to enjoy the companionship, the memories, wonderful weather, the ports and all the great amenities of life aboard a beautiful ship.
