A military airlift of the new Liberal government's promised 25,000 Syrian refugees would strain military resources and leave the air force largely unable to sustain operations around the globe, sources tell CBC News, suggesting contracted civilian airliners are a better option.
But the Liberal refugee proposal is also large and the logistics so intense, it's also unlikely the government could meet its obligations without relying heavily on the military and its network of bases and troops across the country.

Imagine that a foreign military fighter jet flying above Newfoundland crashes in a remote area, and that 9 Wing Gander's new wing commander doesn't know if they can respond.
The idea is not so far-fetched.
"When I arrived here in Gander this summer, I asked about force protection. What do we have in place?" asked Lt.-Col. Pierre Haché.
"Essentially we had nothing that would stand the test of scrutiny."

Defence experts are skeptical that Justin Trudeau's Liberal government will reap any significant windfall from buying a warplane that is cheaper than the controversial F-35 fighter.
The Liberals promised during the election campaign to look elsewhere for a plane and plow the savings into more ships for the Royal Canadian Navy. But military experts say different aircraft might not be a bargain when the costs of buying, operating and maintaining them over 20 to 30 years are tallied up.

Malvern Collegiate's formidable rugby team of 1939 steamrolled its way to the city championships. Team members pledged to join the forces together to fight in the Second World War. Several didn't return, but the memory of one lives on at Trenton Air Base.
Born in 1922, Kenneth Tutton grew up at 17 Firstbrook Rd., the son of Thomas Tutton, an English immigrant from the Isle of Wight. His mother, Nellie, was descended from the First Nations of Lake Scugog.

Alex Campbell's wife never doubted the 92-year-old war veteran would make it through heart surgery at Hamilton General Hospital.
She just knew he'd come home to her in Paris, ON.
"He had to have it done," said Hazel Campbell. "I expected him to come through it."
It was the same instinct that told her 71 years ago he'd survive piloting the Avro Lancaster through 25 bombing runs in the Second World War and return to Toronto to marry her.
"I never doubted for a minute he'd come back," she said. "I knew he would."

With the election of a new government in Ottawa comes an opportunity to revise and review Canada's foreign and defence policy — not least as it pertains to the country's continued and long-standing commitment to NATO. Importantly, the alliance as a whole is facing a watershed moment which will determine its mandate and identity for the coming years. NATO must adjust to the current state of geopolitics and members must reaffirm their commitment to the alliance and its mandate.

It is my hope that fellow RCAF Association members in the Clearwater and Tampa, FL, areas can join us on Jan. 11th, 2016, to honour those Floridians who volunteered with the RCAF and RAF during the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Legion Post 144 plans to host the event during their meeting at the American Legion Post 7 facility in Clearwater, FL. Canadian Forces personnel from around Florida will attend. Karl Kjarsgaard, who is a Board Member of Bomber Command Museum of Canada and the Director of Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada), will be speaking and displaying Bomber Command Museum's transportable memorial. We will also have representatives or members of the Civil Air Patrol (U.S. Air Force Auxiliary) and Florida Aviation Historical Society. Hopefully, RAF, USAF and other officials will agree to attend. The building's occupancy capacity is 225 persons. The two plaques that will be dedicated can be seen here and here. Note that Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada) donated the aluminum for the RCAF crest. The metal was obtained from a downed Halifax bomber. I will update everyone again once additional details become known. Mr. Dann Oliver (RCL Post 144 & RCL Eastern Division, U.S.A.) and I are planning and coordinating.

Cruising Panama Canal
Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica

Huatulco, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
