Pamela Wallin steps down as RCAF Honorary Colonel

Senator Pamela Wallin has stepped down from her role as the Honorary Colonel of the Royal Canadian Air Force, a job that required her to be a mentor and role model for military personnel at Ottawa headquarters. Then-Defence Minister Peter MacKay appointed Wallin to the position Aug. 1, 2009. Her letter of resignation was received and accepted on by the RCAF commander, Lt.-Gen. Yvan Blondin, the RCAF stated in an email.

Snowbirds to keep flying, future training being studied

The air force plans to keep the Snowbirds' Tutor jets flying while it figures out how to train pilots in the future, Canada's top general says. General Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff, said replacing the team's CT-114A jets, which were delivered in the mid-1960s as trainers, is tied to how the air force will train pilots in the future.

Cold War memento returned to family of fallen RCAF navigator

A long lost family heirloom created in memory of Cold War navigator Flight Lieutenant Leon Rodrique "Denny" Fillion has been returned to members of his family — 46 years after his death.
The heirloom's return to Canada marked the final leg of a journey that has brought a sense of closure to a family that never got to say goodbye.

Canadian air force evaluators warned nearly a decade ago that the CH-148 Cyclone helicopter might not measure up in terms of engine performance, acoustic noise and its ability to resist electronic interference, The Canadian Press has learned.
Previously unreleased National Defence reports that date back to Sept. 2004, recently viewed by CP, cite a litany of concerns about Sikorsky's plan to convert its existing S-92 helicopter for maritime and military missions.

At the age of 18, Doreen Head boarded a train and headed east.
The Niagara Falls, ON, resident had never been away from home before she enlisted in the Canadian military in 1943, but she was eager to make a difference in the war effort.
"A lot of people weren't too happy about women in the forces," the veteran recalled.

The bi-annual Junior Ranks Reunion is held for those who were stationed at RCAF Station St. Hubert - including but not limited to those who worked with the 401 & 438 Reserve Sqn’s, 104 KU, 426 Sqn, ADCHQ, and all other units. Today St. Hubert has so much less activity that we hold our reunion at RCAF Base Trenton. Our 9th bi-annual reunion will be held in the WOs' & SGTs' Mess at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario between June 20th – 22nd, 2014.
