Canada will explore an interim buy of 18 Super Hornet fighter jets from Boeing, a blow to Lockheed Martin that kicks a final decision on whether to procure the F-35 further down the road.
"Canada will immediately explore the acquisition of 18 new Super Hornet aircraft to supplement the CF-18s until the permanent replacement arrives," the Canadian government announced in a release. "Canada's current fleet is now more than 30 years old and is down from 138 aircraft to 77. As a result, the Royal Canadian Air Force faces a capability gap."

Just over a year ago, I was given the mandate to work with the Minister of Global Affairs to re-engage Canada in peace operations. Supporting and building peace has long been a tradition of our great country. Canadian values include our desire and our ability to bring people together, to find common ground, and to build relationships based on trust and friendship. We have also always believed in doing the right thing; in standing up for our friends and helping them back up when they fall.

There is new signage at Jackson Park in Windsor that's been installed at the foot of the WWII fighter plane monument to better explain the significance of the two planes to city and country.
The Essex Memorial Spitfire Committee donated the three signs that were installed by City of Windsor staff.
Michael Beale with the park signage team associated with the committee feels the new addition will be well received.
"There wasn't anything in Jackson Park to explain what these two aircraft mean to the City of Windsor," says Beale.

In late September, Defense News and Bloomberg news service reported that the U.S. was going to proceed with fighter jet sales of F-15s and Super Hornets to various Middle East nations.
The package was to include 72 Boeing F-15 Strike Eagles for Qatar and 40 Boeing F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets for Kuwait.
The fighter jets were requested more than two years ago by Kuwait and Qatar.
